The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The Direct Support Professional IV Campus/Shift Coordinator performs advanced work organizing, coordinating and overseeing activities and ensuring facility-wide staff coverage at the State Supported Living Center. Coordinates all shift activities within residential services.

Continuously monitors the homes, infirmary, activity centers, and grounds, watching for unusual occurrences and addressing emergencies and incidents immediately upon discovery or notification. Ensures that care, treatment, and support activities are ongoing at the facility. Provides coaching and in-service training to staff when needed.

Ensures adequate staff coverage, assists with personnel issues, and ensures client protection. Makes staff reassignment decisions and client supervision determinations. Monitors the use of restraints.

Documents daily issues, concerns and incidents for further review. Serves as the contact person for Abuse/Neglect allegations and as the first responding staff on the scene of a critical incident. Works closely and collaboratively with administrative/supervisory staff to coordinate and monitor service delivery, conducting special targeted reviews or audits of identified areas when requested.

Serves as home supervisor for a home/unit when needed due to prolonged vacancy, at the discretion of facility management. Works under limited supervision with the considerable use of initiative and independent judgment.

This position is required to drive a state-owned vehicle.

Essential Job Functions:

Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. May serve in an on-call status on a rotating schedule as required to meet operational needs of the facility.

Ensures adequate facility coverage and staff/individual ratios. Moves staff where needed to ensure appropriate coverage to meet the needs of the facility.

Reassigns staff to non-contact positions in accordance with agency and local policy and procedures. Communicates issues with the appropriate administrator when necessary to facilitate calling in additional staff and/or holding staff over. Assists with personnel issues such as resolving staff conflicts and providing worker compensation materials.

Completes routine, ongoing monitoring of homes, infirmary, activity centers and grounds, addressing unusual occurrences, emergencies, and incidents immediately upon discovery. Documents findings, makes reports, and communicates issues to appropriate administrator. Observes and reports physical plant issues to ensure that the facility maintains a safe and sanitary living environment for individuals.

Ensures the effective delivery of care, treatment, and support activities are ongoing at the facility by observing and monitoring the activities and work behaviors of direct support staff during campus rounds. Provides on-the-job coaching and in-services as needed to improve work performance. Documents staff performance issues, and issues with individuals/residents for effective communication with and follow up by other administrative and supervisory staff.

Serves as contact person for abuse/neglect allegations, serious incidents and responds immediately to ensure the safety and health of individuals. Monitors and documents the use of restraints and may be required to participate in restraints.

Serves as the first responding staff on the scene of a critical incident. Coordinates and/or assists with unusual incidents to ensure compliance with appropriate rules and standards.

Conducts special audits/reviews and monitoring as scheduled or requested by facility administration to ensure on-going service delivery and the health and safety of individuals served and to improve the quality of services at areas targeted for improvement through facility corrective action plans. Instructs, trains, and provides in-service to facility staff on approved policies, procedures and guidelines.

If required by facility administration, serves as a home supervisor for a home/unit due to prolonged vacancy, performing administrative and programming duties that include supervising and evaluating direct care staff within the unit.

Attends meetings, serves on committee, and performs other specific tasks when directed by the supervisor.

Provides assistance in transporting of individuals going on scheduled activities and in emergency situations, as needed.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Knowledge of individual care techniques and of treatment, therapy, and developmental programs.

  • Knowledge, or ability to gain knowledge, of the facility policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of basic scheduling techniques, considerations, and facility-coverage strategies.

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner.

  • Skill in using good judgment and making effective decisions when dealing with unusual/critical incidents.

  • Skill in working effectively with others and as a member of a team.

  • Skills in effectively communicating the need for overtime work and engendering staff buy-in.

  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in an emergency.

  • Ability to train staff in job related subject areas.

  • Ability to master basic techniques of individual care and training.

  • Ability to be flexible in handling work assignments.

  • Ability to provide individual care, to administer first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, to conduct Safety Utilization of Restraint (SUR).

  • Strength and flexibility to safely perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Safety Utilization of Restraint (SUR) techniques to restrain and prevent harm to that individual or others until the harmful/violent behavior subsides.

  • Physical ability to perform direct contact duties and to complete regular rounds over a wide area.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:

Valid Texas driver's license, or ability to obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date, is required. Applicants with an out-of-state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure.

Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy. Initial Selection Criteria:

High school graduation or high school equivalency (e.g. GED) is preferred.

Two (2) years' experience working in the field related to this position (working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health issues and/or physical disabilities).

Experience in a lead and/or supervisory role.

Additional Information:

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/Entities.

Males between the ages of 18 - 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All State Supported Living Center employees are subject to Random drug testing.

Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position. The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours. Must be willing to work weekends and holidays.
