DSHS WSH Safety & Intervention Trainer - Institution Counselor 3
Western State Hospital is hiring for an Institution Counselor 3 - Safety & Intervention Trainer.

Opportunities performed on-site at this work location at least three days a week may be eligible for an additional 5% premium pay in addition to the advertised salary. Evening hours include a shift differential in addition to the standard compensation rate.
Pierce County employees are eligible to receive an Orca Card for transportation needs.
Some of what you'll do:
Train and instruct an array of the hospital's approved initial and refresher education courses to psychiatric hospital employees in New Employee Orientation, Clinical Employee Orientation, Annual In-Service
Plan and deliver quality education courses as indicated by the respective certification, instructor guidelines, curriculum or training of trainer
Instruct and facilitate courses utilizing adult learning principles to engage, motivate, and enhance staff learning and comprehension
Conduct check-ins on NEO graduates to identify training needs, training trends, and offer opportunities to provide additional training
As an educator and role model - demonstrate value based leadership for staff to engage, motivate and support an optimal learning experience
Evaluate staff competency for acquired learning objectives of knowledge, skills, and abilities
Receive and review written and oral feedback to collaborate and continuously provide improvement to course materials, content and training delivery
Provide technical assistance and specialized training consultation to program participants, employees and internal/external stakeholders
As directed, review policies and provide consultation regarding improvements
Develop and secure training materials, ensuring stakeholder input is gathered
Design and update lesson plans, student handbooks, assessments, handouts, trainer guides and other necessary materials for instructor-led and online training
Other duties as assigned
Who should apply:
Those with a bachelor's degree preferably involving a major study in sociology or other social science
AND
Two years of professional counseling or casework experience
One year of graduate training in behavioral social sciences may be substituted year for year for casework experience;
OR
One year as an Institution Counselor 2.
Employees obtain and maintain an Agency Affiliated Counselor license from the Washington State Department of Health within 30 days of employment as a condition of employment. More information can be found here.

In-depth working knowledge of group and individual behavior and dynamics
Knowledge of behavioral health issues and recovery principles
Experience in intervening and de-escalating crisis/dangerous situations
Knowledge of all hospital, state, and federal regulatory standards, policies, and procedures
Ability to work with difficult or angry patients in a therapeutic, non-threatening manner
Understanding of recreation in a psychiatric setting
