Some of what you will do

  • Repair and maintain HVAC systems with computer systems across the Western State Hospital campus. These systems control many large buildings at multiple locations for a 1.5 million square foot hospital

  • Install, inspect, repair, and maintain control systems that include electrical, electronic, and pneumatic sensors and actuators

  • Repair and maintain equipment such as pumps, traps, valves, steam, laundry, kitchen equipment, motors, belts, sheaves, control valves, heating and cooling coils, dampers, and change filters

  • Monitor and adjust heat and air conditioning in buildings using automated building monitoring and control systems

  • Repair pneumatic, electric, electronic, temperature, and humidity controls

  • Disassemble valves and equipment, replace worn parts, and reassemble and test equipment

  • Drive equipment in transporting supplies and tools

Who should apply

Those with journey-level standing as a refrigeration mechanic or steamfitter as attested by:

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in refrigerator or steamfitter trades, OR

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, OR

  • Full journey-level status in the Plumbers and Pipefitters' Union, OR

  • 5+ years of applicable experience in the refrigeration or steamfitter trades or a combination of the two.

  • Vocational or Trade School training as a steamfitter or refrigeration mechanic will substitute, year for year, for work experience up to a maximum of 2 years

The following is highly desired:

  • Current WA EL06 License

  • EPA 608 Universal Certification / CFC license

  • Knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical trades and HVAC work

  • Ex: principles of operation of HVAC systems, occupational hazards, and safety practices of the HVAC trade

  • Ability to read, interpret, and update blueprints, use automated building monitoring and control systems, estimate time and materials, use arc and gas welding equipment, and use all types of hand and power tools
