We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Medical Director within the Behavioral Health Administration (BHA). This position will be based out of the Department of Social and Health Services Headquarters but will provide supervision and oversight in the treatment of residents who are housed in any of the BHA Residential Treatment Facilities (RTFs), including Civil Centers for Behavioral Health at Maple Lane and Brockmann Campus, Competency Restoration Programs, and the NGRI facility at Maple Lane. The RTFs currently serve a total of approximately 125 residents. The RTF Medical Director will have thorough knowledge and skill in treatment modalities such as psychosocial methods of teaching, legal knowledge, illness management, and social skills training.

In this role, as RTF Medical Director, you will ensure that standards of patient care and psychiatric/medical services are consistent with current professional expectations for certification and regulatory bodies. You will strategically partner with BHA RTF leadership at both the statewide and facility levels, implementing systemic change to the behavioral health system. You will offer recommendations to improve quality care, treatment, and policies at the multiple RTFs, and offer medical consultation of staff. You will proactively meet regularly with professional and clinical staff, participate in the formulation or revision of policies, procedures, and manuals, participate in the relevant committee meetings, and evaluate treatment programs.

Your initial focus and accomplishments over the next few months include developing an organizational structure for medical/clinical staff that is associated with the regulatory expectations for the facility, assessing the existing resources, and requirements, and conducting an associated gap analysis. You will develop and administer facility procedures and processes to assist and support the highest quality of medical/clinical services that are requested, provided/documented/communicated for the facility.

Some of what you'll be doing:

  • Perform leadership and executive duties in the planning, developing, coordinating, implementing, directing, and evaluating of clinical and professional services.

  • Promote the mission and goals of the civil and forensic residential treatment facilities by effectively leading and coaching.

  • Responsible and accountable for the administration and coordination of hospital psychiatric and medical services and provides consultation on clinical matters.

  • Supervise all clinical services and activities through subordinate directors and managers and provide leadership and guidance in matters related to the medical and clinical management of patients.

  • Collaborate with statewide and local RTF leadership, develop, implement, and oversee medical aspects of the facilities.

  • Establish and oversee effective treatment processes to ensure quality service is delivered in a timely and accurate manner to help ensure quality patient care.

  • Ensure clinical services to all patients are provided with integrity and in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations, certification and accreditation standards, and professional standards of practice.

  • Collaborate with RTF Quality Assurance and Improvement Manager(s) to assist in the development and refinement of key performance indicators (quality and service) to drive operational efficiencies (costs) while enhancing staff satisfaction and safety.

  • Participate in formulation and revision of RTF policies and ensure medical/clinical policies and practices effectively support sound and safe patient care, and the delivery of healthcare services provides the highest level of positive experiences to all patients.

  • Supervise specified clinical positions within each RTF, providing consultation and guidance.

Who should apply?

  • Valid license to practice Medicine and Surgery in the State of Washington.

  • Certification in General Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology

  • Demonstrated medical executive leadership

Preferred/desired education, experience, and competencies:

  • Five years experience in medical executive leadership

  • Knowledge of evidence-based psychiatric practice and psychopharmacology

  • Knowledge of evidence-based psychosocial therapies, trauma-informed care, and emerging concepts in recovery from mental illness

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well in interdisciplinary settings

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills that encompass sound judgment, decision-making, conflict resolution, problem-solving, time management, and strategic planning.

  • Experience in the private sector and management skills can be incorporated into the state system to improve services
