Dry Processing/Bulk Unloading Technician

J.M. Smucker Team Members are self-starters, work with minimal supervision, and are able to work up to 12 hour shifts 7 days a week. Team Members have good mechanical aptitude, and take initiative to get the job done and right. Team members rotate shifts every 4 weeks.

Team Members must have mechanical aptitude and the ability to adjust and repair machines while standing/walking for long periods of time. This position also requires the ability to lift up-to 50 pounds, monitor multiple pieces of equipment at one time, document and sample collection to meet quality checks, and follow directions.

Basic Purpose:

  • To operate and maintain production lines from start to finish.

  • To batch premix to ingredient specifications and to unload and deliver raw ingredients to the proper locations Adherence to Topeka Good Manufacturing Practices, QA specifications, approved formulations in order to reliably supply quality products.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • To record periodic Quality Control Checks

  • Test, scale and unload major and minor ingredient trucks

  • Continuously monitor systems on screens and respond to problems

  • Start-up, clean-up, and shut-down area on a weekly basis

  • Accurately collect data and maintain records

  • Safely operate forklift

  • Review, follow, and write Job Safety Analyses and Safe Practices for the area

  • Make adjustments and repairs to machines to maintain operating efficiency

  • Perform preventative maintenance in area

  • Maintain good housekeeping with sanitation as a constant and critical issue

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts through Reliability team

  • Be prepared to do what is manually required to keep production running

  • Willingness to follow all SOP's

  • To be able to lift 50lbs. 5'5" high

  • To be able to stand for prolonged periods of time

  • To have mechanical aptitude

  • To have good communication skills

  • To be able to work well with others

  • To be able to work rotating shifts

  • To be able to work 12-hour days when required

  • To be able to work 12 days on and 2 off

  • To participate in Saturday maintenance

Skills and Knowledge:

  • High level of alertness

  • Ability to monitor multiple operations simultaneously and respond quickly

  • Knowledge in high speed packing equipment very helpful

  • Be able to work with metric and American hand tools

  • Basic math skills

  • Read pressure gauges

  • Proper lifting techniques

  • Have understanding of pneumatics

  • Understanding of mechanical timing, related to machines with camshafts

  • Ability to quickly understand and operate highly automated equipment with computer interfaces

  • Adhere to plant safety rules

  • Adhere to plant G.M.P's

Additional Information:

  • Mandatory overtime

  • Understand all JSA's and Safe Practices

  • Area can be hot in summer months; cold in winter

  • Need own hand tools

Years of Experience:
1 or more years of manufacturing experience or mechanical aptitude preferred


High School Diploma or GED

Employees shall also be aware that our customers may request additional measures to be taken in quality and food safety systems such as those put forth in the Global Food Safety Initiative that include the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
