Become a key player in the discovery of innovative medicines

At AstraZeneca we win through science, it's at the heart of our every success. We continuously forge partnerships to expand our science to help pursue world-class medicines in new ways, combining our people's exceptional skills with those of people from all over the globe. As a Senior Scientist, you'll play a pivotal role in channeling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD-level scientist with a strong background in molecular and cell biology to join the AstraZeneca Oncology Safety Sciences team at our suburban Boston, MA research center. The successful candidate will perform in vitro investigative studies to assess the role of therapeutic targets and pathways on normal tissue/cellular function, with a particular focus on stem cell regeneration, proliferation and differentiation. Our goal is to seek a mechanistic understanding of unanticipated toxicities from projects developing novel oncology medicines and build new in vitro methods to translate findings into clinical settings. You will work closely with a team of scientists to apply cutting edge technologies and push the boundaries of predictive safety science with our mission in mind: to discover safe innovative medicines for the patients that need them.

Essential Requirements

  • A PhD in molecular or cell biology, pharmacology, immunology, molecular toxicology or similar discipline with at least 2 years of post-doctoral research

  • Ability to build an understanding of biology around novel targets and pathways, develop testable hypotheses, and drive scientific learning.

  • Proven experience in molecular and cellular biology techniques applied to development of physiologically-relevant cellular assays (such as tissue "organoids") to dissect biological mechanisms (examples could include -omics technologies, gene editing, confocal imaging and/or flow cytometry and other advanced cell systems)

  • A strong publication record demonstrating scientific excellence applying molecular techniques to advance understanding of cellular biology

  • Outstanding oral presentation and written communication skills

  • Highly motivated, innovative scientist with strong influencing skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset

Preferred Background

  • Expertise in the design and execution of molecular biological and biochemical or cellular experiments to determine the effects of therapeutics on biological systems, especially stem cell biology

  • Understanding of the drug discovery process from experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry

At AstraZeneca, we place a strong emphasis on individual talent development. Join us and you will be able to develop your scientific leadership by working together with leaders in cell biology, advanced imaging, 'omic technologies, microphysiological systems, drug discovery and predictive safety science.

VIEW JOBS 9/13/2019 12:00:00 AM 2019-12-12T00:00 Discovery Safety Associate Principal Scientist Waltham, MA Become a key player in the discovery of innovative oncology medicines One of the major challenges in the discovery of innovative medicines is to ensure they are safe enough to test their therapeutic concept in clinical trials to provide novel treatment for patients. Drug safety is assessed throughout the pharmaceutical R&D value chain, but it is during early drug discovery when we can actively design safety attributes into the future candidate drug. Our Oncology Safety Science and Discovery section takes on this challenge. As true drug hunting partners with our Oncology R&D unit, we contribute to the selection of novel drug targets, identification and optimization of new small molecule chemical series as well as other therapeutic molecules, and selection of novel candidate drugs. We work collaboratively and develop and apply cutting edge technologies such as tissue organoids, microphysiological systems, multi-omics, state-of-the-art imaging and artificial intelligence, and push the boundaries of predictive safety science with our mission in mind: to discover safe innovative medicines for the patients that need them. We are looking for a talented, experienced investigational toxicologist to join our team at the Boston US research site. Discovery Safety Associate Principal Scientist Job responsibilities include: * Be an integral member Oncology drug discovery project teams, and accountable for the delivery of the safety strategy for those projects. * Engage with experts across the organization to develop, refine and implement experimental strategies to ensure that teams make the right decisions regarding safety risks associated with the project. * Design project-specific investigational and mechanistic safety strategies to predict, assess and mitigate target- and chemistry-related safety risks and execute through internal and external experimental capabilities. * Develop innovative solutions and research proposals to pursue cutting edge science and technologies such as 3D microphysiological systems to optimize and influence safety assessment of novel drug targets. * Make a significant contribution to Discovery Safety scientific leadership within and outside AstraZeneca including external meeting attendance and regular publication in high quality, peer-reviewed journals. Job requirements (education and experience) include: * PhD in toxicology, pharmacology, cell biology, systems biology or medicinal chemistry, and a strong scientific track record. * Solid understanding of the drug discovery and development process through experience in pharmaceutical safety, with an appreciation of disciplines within and outside drug safety and toxicology. * Experience with the design and execution of in vivo experiments to determine the effects of therapeutics on biological systems, with line of sight to human safety risk understanding. * Hands-on experience with in vitro toxicology, pharmacology and/or molecular biology experimentation to investigate molecular mechanisms of drug action is critical. * Strong communication, presentation and influencing skills across levels/disciplines. * Highly motivated, creative, reliable scientist with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset, who solves problems in a goal-focused fashion. * Knowledge/experience in Oncology will be considered an advantage. * A social personality that contributes to an open, positive, collaborative working climate.
