The Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist is responsible for the supervision, coordination, performance and technical operation in the Cat Scan (CT) section of Imaging Service for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS). The STVHCS includes Audie L Murphy, the Kerrville Division, North Central Federal Clinic, Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic as well as VA satellite clinics in the surrounding communities.
Incumbent works closely with the technologists, radiologists, nurses, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results and patient satisfaction. Incumbent ensures the effective operation of the CT unit from a technical standpoint (i.e. planning, directing, and controlling activities and resources, people and material) to meet the needs of the section.
This includes staffing, assignments, workflow and scheduling administration. Incumbent will distribute workload; maintain the work to ensure that all members of the Imaging Section properly adhere to policies and procedures developed by the Imaging Service and Medical Center, when applicable. Position is an operator of Cat Scan (CT) section.
Directs and participates in on-call coverage of CT, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, providing one-hour response to call-back. Ensures fair and equitable rotation of after hours duty assignments. Prepares formal requests and recommendations for promotions, reassignments, and other status changes, or recognition of outstanding performance of assigned employees.
Responsible for yearly performance appraisals and annually reviews the functional statements and the performance standards on all employees under his/her supervision. Incumbent has overall responsibility to directly supervise the Cat Scan (CT) section of the Imaging Service for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. As a technical specialist, the incumbent independently carries out assignments, coordinates the work with others, and keeps the Chief Technologist informed of potential problems in meeting patient needs.

All applicants must be certified in general Radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic Radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer Radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

The vacancy is for a Supervisory DRT position above the full performance level.
Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Grade Determinations: At the GS-10 grade level, in addition to the basic requirements, applicants must have at least 1 year of the following types of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-9) that fully meets the KSAs for the assignment and grade level.
Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:
Supervisory DRT: Functions as a supervisor for a group of DRTs which may include support staff.
Evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. Informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recommending recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic Radiologic area. Directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff.
Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk :
*a. Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation;
b. Skill to evaluate quality management procedures and processes;
*c. Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity;
*d. Skill to develop new policies and guidelines as needed; and
e. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution.
