Driver/Safety Education Instructor

JOB ASSIGNMENT: Theory and behind-the-wheel locations in the local area.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP: The Driver / Safety Education Instructor reports directly to the CARES Team Leadership Coordinator.

JOB DEFINITION: The Driver / Safety Education Instructor will plan, direct and conduct classroom theory and behind-the-wheel instruction at the secondary level. The instructor will:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach students so that they can acquire a basic fundamental knowledge of driving.

• Stress the importance of defensive driving.

• Attempt to develop a sense of social responsibility.

• Instruct students in the major causes of accidents.

• Provide information on the natural forces of nature that affect the movement and performance of an automobile.

• Assist students in understanding the signs, signals, highway markings and highway design features that require understanding for safe operation of motor vehicles.

• Instruct students on the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, rules of the road, and other state laws and local ordinances.

• Teach the differences in the characteristics of urban and rural driving including safe use of the freeway/expressway.

• Stress the importance of maintaining critical vehicle systems and sub-systems that require preventive maintenance.

• Provide information on the effects of alcohol and drugs.

• Evaluate all students.

• Confer with the driver education data assistant on the scheduling of students for behind-the-wheel instruction and submittal of required forms to PennDOT.

• Complete yearly certification audit with PennDOT for Behind-the-Wheel End of Course Skills Testing Program.

• Retain accurate driving route maps and narratives.

• Submit necessary records to data assistant.

• Communicate with parents on the progress of individual students.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or designee.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

• A Bachelor's degree and a valid Pennsylvania certificate for Driver/Safety Education (CSPG No. 38) are required for this position.

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with adolescent students are required.

• A current, valid Pennsylvania driver's license is a requirement of this position.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).

• Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS:

• Attendance at training seminars and in-service programs identified as mandatory/important to the operation of an effective instruction program.

• Participation in workshops/seminars to increase knowledge in Driver/Safety Education.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time, occasional walking, standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

• Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.).

• Audio-Visual Requirements: Within normal range with or without correction.

• Is able to move throughout all buildings, floors and grounds.

• Worksite Environment: Primarily indoors-office setting with occasional exposure to outdoor elements/climate during the day.

• Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations, ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations. Demonstrates independent judgment, discretion and is able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

• Ability to travel to various work site locations and meetings as needed.

• Perform light physical activities related to demonstrating vehicle maintenance, including bending and lifting.

• Perform light physical activities related to vehicle upkeep and cleanliness.

TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS:

• This is a part time, non-exempt position, not to exceed 29 hours per week or in combination with any additional part-time positions. Additional working hours must be pre-approved by immediate supervisor.

• Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.

• Contact clients within 48 hours of assignment to arrange an appropriate behind-the-wheel driving schedule.

• All property, including intellectual property, materials, equipment or actual products and services developed or accrued as part of the job duties and responsibilities listed above, is the property of the CSIU. It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the CSIU upon termination of employment from the CSIU.

• The person employed in this position shall maintain confidentiality with regard to the personal and private information about clients and co-workers, programs and services, and any other proprietary information accrued as a result of CSIU employment or as required by state or federal laws and regulations.
