Reading Public Schools is dedicated to promoting safe and responsible driving practices among our students and equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to be responsible drivers. We recognize that effective driver education extends beyond knowing how to operate a vehicle; it involves building confidence, fostering responsibility, and instilling respect for traffic rules.

We are seeking a passionate and qualified Driver's Education Instructor to join our Community Education team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in driving instruction, excellent communication skills, and a genuine desire to educate and empower new drivers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct classroom instruction sessions for both teenagers and adults, covering topics such as traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving techniques, and vehicle maintenance.

  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that adhere to the Massachusetts Driver's Education curriculum guidelines.

  • Provide behind-the-wheel instruction to students of varying skill levels, focusing on safe driving practices, maneuvering techniques, and decision-making abilities.

  • Evaluate student performance during driving sessions, providing constructive feedback and guidance for improvement.

  • Administer written exams and driving assessments to evaluate students' comprehension and driving abilities.

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and evaluation results.

  • Effectively communicate with students, parents, and administrative staff to address concerns, provide updates, and coordinate scheduling.

  • Stay informed about changes in driving laws, regulations, and best practices to ensure the delivery of up-to-date and relevant instruction.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay current with instructional techniques.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license

  • Current Certified Driving Instructor issued by the Massachusetts's Registry of Motor Vehicles

  • 2+ years licensed driving experience

Supervisory Responsibilities: Driver's Education Instructor supervises students behind the wheel for the driver's education vehicle.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student and school information

  • Strong communication skills and ability to multi-task

  • Excellent organizational and time management abilities

  • Ability to adapt and problem-solve in the before/after school environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and staff.

  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and policies.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workplace

Working Conditions:

  • Regular movement required to provide services, occasional traversal throughout school building.

  • Essential duties include sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, squatting, bending, twisting at neck and trunk.

  • Frequent use of hands and hand strength required, occasional lifting/moving of up to fifty (50) pounds without assistance.

  • Effective communication with students, parents, and staff members in person and via telephone.

  • Continuous ability to see and hear in classroom environment, occasional quick movement across surfaces.

  • Normal noise level, interaction with students, parents, and staff members.

  • Occasional outdoor activities such as playground play, fire drills, and special activities.
