SUMMARY

The Driver, Recreation operates a passenger bus/van to assure safe transportation of residents/tenants/staff/families to and from various destinations and assists residents or tenants before, during and following transport.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the health and safety of residents/tenants by driving safely and obeying all traffic laws.

a. Transport residents/tenants to events and appointments off campus.

b. Handle emergency situations as they arise professionally and in accordance with appropriate protocol.

c. Demonstrate knowledge, caring and understanding toward each person including using creative problem-solving techniques as needed.

  • Communicate with appropriate staff, accurately track passenger counts, and create and maintain a variety of records and documents.

a. Complete pre-trip log for each outing including inspection of vehicle.

b. Obtain daily schedule and appropriate sign-up sheet for the bus outings and shopping trips from appropriate staff members.

c. Accurately track passengers throughout the day to make sure no one is left behind.

d. Document incidents, write up "Internal Concern Reports" on the day the incident occurred, give to supervisor immediately for investigation and communicate concerns to appropriate staff.

e. Assist in creating schedules for shopping and doctor's routes and prepare weekly shopping sign-up sheets as needed.

  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on vehicles and inform supervisor as appropriate for other maintenance needed for vehicles.

a. Perform minor preventive maintenance such as ensuring appropriate tire pressure, adding washer fluid, clean mirrors, etc.

b. Responsible for cleanliness of vehicle (interior and exterior) and disposal of garbage and or other items behind by riders.

c. Schedule regular maintenance and repairs for the vehicles.

  • Responsible for obtaining assistance as appropriate in the event of vehicle break-down.

  • Perform miscellaneous projects and complete various tasks in and outside of the building as requested.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Current driver's license: MN Class B, CDL, with passenger endorsement required

  • Current DOT Medical Examiner's certificate required or ability to obtain within specified period of time.

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment DOT drug and alcohol screening, and ability to pass random selection screening.

  • Clean driving record, minimum of past three years required.

  • One or more years of experience operating large vehicles, preferably passenger vehicles.

  • CPR/First Aid certified through the American Red Cross preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the rules and regulations involved in the safe and efficient operation of automotive equipment.

  • Detailed knowledge of state and local laws governing operation of motor vehicles on highways and city streets including obeying all traffic laws.

  • Able to manage the driving schedule and to plan and prepare ahead.

  • Able to understand and follow facility and department safety and emergency procedures.

  • Able to plan, prioritize, coordinate, and manage own work. Able to work unsupervised, make decisions and solve routine problems

independently, effectively and creatively.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with a variety of people and personalities inside and outside the organization. Able to effectively handle interactions at all levels and to respond appropriately in sensitive situations.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to all levels of people inside and outside the organization, including possessing good English speaking skills, fluency and understandability.

  • Able to display high levels of customer service, responding promptly and thoroughly to the inquiries and needs of individuals both internal and external to the organization in accordance with our PROUD standards.

  • Work as an effective and proactive team-player; understand the importance of supporting the organization, residents/tenants/customers and other Sholom employees.

  • Understand and maintain confidential nature of organization and client information, including and in accordance to HIPAA regulations.

  • Able to understand the use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used in cleaning. Keep chemicals and cleaning supplies safely stored.

  • Able to follow and adhere to Infection Control procedures including frequent washing of hands and using hand sanitizer on the buses.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Perform medium work, lifting up to 40 pounds, with frequent lifting/carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • Push and move wheelchairs with residents of all weights and sizes for short and long distances.

  • Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing to all levels of people inside and outside the organization, including possessing good English speaking skills, fluency and understandability.

  • Sit for extended periods of time and perform long hours of work sitting in and driving a vehicle.

  • Move around repeatedly throughout the day including in and out of vehicles, assist residents/tenants on and off the bus, help load shopping purchases, walkers and wheelchairs on bus repeatedly throughout the day.

  • Apply manual dexterity to handle and manipulate objects, tools and controls.

  • Visual acuity and ability for safe operation of a motorized vehicle, and to review detailed reports and information.

  • Able to work a flexible work schedule, including overtime, nights and weekends as required including attending events/meetings as needed.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Incumbent must be able to operate large vehicles, lift equipment and know how to correctly secure wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
