POSITION JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Driver's Education (Behind the Wheel) Instuctor

REPORTS TO: Behind-the-Wheel Coordinator, Division Head and Building Principal

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Experience or Training

Valid Illinois Professional Educators License with endorsement in Safety & Driver Education (Grades 9-12)

Desired Experience or Training

Internal Candidate Preferred

Master's Degree; Previous high school teaching experience

Previous experience teaching International Baccalaureate (IB) courses

Previous experience teaching Advanced Placement (AP) courses

Multiple endorsements/licenses

This is a part-time position. The BTW instructor is paid an hourly rate. After school and/ or Saturdays.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedule determined based on student enrollment in the program.

  • Instruct students behind the wheel for the purpose of developing driving skills and knowledge pertaining to rules of the road.

  • Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe learning environment.

  • Maintain and prepare all necessary records and reports.

  • All other duties as assigned by administration.

INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD

  • Teach to prescribed outcomes and goals

  • Use instructional methods that improve student achievement

  • Assign and evaluate appropriate student work

  • Involve students in learning

  • Make effective use of entire class period

  • Use appropriate school support and resource materials

  • Convey to students learning goals and the importance of material learned

  • Be clear in explanations and directions

  • Provide continuity in learning activities

  • Challenge students by using appropriate questioning strategies

  • Speak clearly, audibly, and fluently

  • Adjust the teaching pace to assure maximum student understanding

  • Provide appropriate remedial and/or enrichment material whenever necessary

  • Communicate high expectations for student performance

INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING

  • Establish a positive and safe learning environment

  • Revise lesson plans as needed

  • Plan instructional examples, illustrations, and time for questions into lessons

  • Address different styles of learning by employing a variety of instructional techniques and materials

  • Be creative and innovative in the use of curricular and instructional materials

SUBJECT MATTER

  • Demonstrate command of subject areas crucial to instructional effectiveness

  • Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary instructional research related to the subject area and to the teaching of diverse students

  • Remain current in the assigned content area and in the profession

  • Demonstrate enthusiasm about subject matter

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES

  • Develop, communicate, and enforce a set of classroom rules, policies, procedures, and expectations which are consistent with school and department policies and with learning outcomes

  • Monitor student behavior for compliance with classroom rules

  • Reinforce/reward appropriate social and academic behavior

  • Respond to behavior problems quickly and appropriately

  • Have necessary material and equipment available and ensure their appropriate use and care

  • Provide and distribute necessary classroom materials in an orderly and efficient manner

  • Interact with students in ways which are respectful and friendly, and which reflect an understanding of cultural differences

  • Provide students feedback on their knowledge and skill

  • Use effective methods to manage student behavior

PROFESSIONALLY RELATED COMPETENCIES

  • Participate in review and updating of curricular programs

  • Perform promptly the responsibilities stipulated in Board of Education policies and administrative procedures

  • Adhere to all personal absences procedures and provides appropriate plans and materials for use by the substitute

  • Model and enforce classroom and school rules, policies, and procedures; exemplify the district's mission and beliefs

  • Be punctual in arrival times to the building, to classes, and to meetings

  • Report promptly student behavior, attendance, and performance to family or guardians and when necessary, refer students to appropriate school personnel; stay in regular communications with parents.

  • Cooperate with other educational personnel

  • Implement recommendations made in the evaluation and supervisory process
