Function

Performs heavy manual work in the maintenance of the City drainage ways and their associated structures. Prevents/mitigates property damage and mosquito breeding by eliminating impoundments during pre-and post-storm inspections. Operates variety of hand tools, power tools and equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City's public works infrastructure. May operate one or more types of motorized and automotive equipment.

Examples of Work

  • Operates a variety of hand tools to include shovels, rakes, pick axes and string line trimmers, chain saws, industrial mowers, backpack blowers, power winches, pole saws.

  • Performs pre-operational inspections, operates, makes problem diagnosis and performs minor field maintenance on a variety of power and hand tools.

  • Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment and cleaning up work areas.

  • Operates a variety of automotive equipment to include dump trucks, utility trucks, pickup trucks, stake body trucks, snow plows, and medium sand spreaders.

  • Operates a variety of motorized equipment to include farm tractors, air compressors and attachments, concrete saws, chain saws, and other small powered equipment as required.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or successful completion of the GED is preferred. Requires a minimum of one (1) year of experience in operating equipment as listed above; ability to demonstrate proficiency in the operation of equipment required; ability to work independently and set and follow priorities; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with the general public and other personnel. General knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of automotive and motorized equipment and the use of hand tools and equipment. Must possess of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and have a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. Any person offered employment in this position shall be required to successfully pass testing for controlled substances. Any person under consideration for this position shall be required to successfully complete a background check related to this position.

Features

Performs duties under the general supervision of an assigned supervisor; receives direction from crew leaders. Occasional overtime, evening, weekend and holiday work is required. Incumbent is subject to call-out and may be required to carry an electronic signaling device which enables him/her to respond to emergency situations. This is a non-exempt position.

Any person under consideration for this position must successfully complete a Virginia Criminal History Background Check.
