Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Four years of experience as a DPS Police Officer as a POST-certified peace officer with the power of arrest.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Six years of any law enforcement experience as a POST-certified peace officer with the powers of arrest.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must have attained twenty-first birthday at time of application.

Must possess a valid driver's license at time of appointment.

Active Police Officers Standard of Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified by the hiring agency until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Must complete Louisiana State Police annual in-service training.

Must complete Louisiana DPS Police Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.

Must complete Louisiana DPS Police advanced firearms qualification course.

Must complete Louisiana intoxilyzer certification.

Must complete Louisiana State Police relational leadership first line supervisor training.

Job Concepts

FUNCTION OF WORK:

To supervise the law enforcement activities in support of the DPS Police mission to protect life, enforce laws, serve the public, and conduct investigations.

LEVEL OF WORK:

Supervisor.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

General from a DPS Police Lieutenant or other higher-level law enforcement personnel.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Direct over lower-level DPS Police Officers.

LOCATION OF WORK:

The Department of Public Safety and Corrections - Public Safety Services (DPS).

JOB DISTINCTIONS:

Differs from DPS Corporal by the presence of direct supervision of lower-level DPS Police Officers.

Differs from DPS Police Lieutenant by the absence of serving as a second-line supervisor over lower-level DPS Police Officers.

Performs complex law enforcement patrol related duties of public highways, state facilities, and other areas.

Conducts law enforcement activities designed to protect life, enforce traffic and criminal laws, and to provide public safety services.

Investigates complex criminal violations through surveillance.

May identify, contact, and develop potential confidential informants.

Identifies and apprehends suspected violators.

Investigates crime and vehicle crash scenes for the purpose of gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to be used in making determinations of cause in prosecuting suspects.

Secures areas impacted by natural/manmade disasters and civil disturbances.

Coordinates the removal of injured persons and vehicles involved in crashes or other incidents.

Completes documents related to enforcement activities such as reports of investigations, inspections, written warnings, citations, affidavits, warrants/ search warrants, property receipts/releases, and paperwork that may be required by other law enforcement agencies.

Inspects/investigates facilities to determine compliance with state laws and regulations, to maintain annual security assessments, and to improve public safety.

Appears as a witness in court.

Monitors subordinates' performance to ensure compliance with laws and department policy.

Reviews reports for accuracy and compliance with department policy.

Reviews arrests to determine probable cause and ensure adherence with constitutional rights.

Coordinates and oversees Police Officers assigned to special projects.

Manages specialized units such as bicycle team, community outreach team, and regional traffic safety coalition activities.

Manages the department's Field Training Program.

Serves a regional supervisor for law enforcement services.
