Position Summary

Performs CT simulation and treatment planning, along with 3-D and IMRT treatment planning, under the direction of a staff physicist. Performs general patient dosimetry to include hand calculations for external beam therapy and irregularly shaped field calculations. Prepares Total Body Irradiation data for treatment. Performs QA on treatment planning system and participates in departmental QA program. Secondary report is to department Chair.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Independently assesses the necessary dosimetry and physics requirements for fulfilling the physician's prescription

  • Recommends treatment strategies to the physician

  • Performs CT and conventional simulation procedures

  • Contours normal tissues according to physician instructions.

  • Digitizes and imports all beam shaping blocks at the completion of the simulation process

  • Performs 2, 3-D, and IMRT treatment planning

  • Performs treatment planning for HDR and interstitial brachytherapy

  • Performs point dose calculations for irregularly shaped fields

  • Obtains output factors for electron beam cutouts

  • Computes monitor units for all external beam treatments

  • Attends meetings as required

  • Performs TLD and other personal dosimetry measurements

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

  • Bachelor's degree or Graduate of 12-month Medical Dosimetry program

  • 24 months experience following MDCB certification may substitute for minimum education requirements

  • No experience required if educational requirement is met and incumbent is board eligible

  • Mathematically adept/computer literate and understand all aspects of patient simulation/set-ups

Required Certification/Licensure:

  • MDCB or eligible
  • BLS certified through the American Heart Association

Preferred education experience and skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in science

  • Dosimetry

Position Summary Provides medical physics services to the Radiation Oncology Center according to established policies and procedures. Working in close collaboration with physicians and radiation therapist and under the supervision of the center's medical director. Key Responsibilities include: * Demonstrate understanding of South Pasadena CC mission and vision statement. Provides quality service to customers, employees and visitors in the performance of work assignments and duties. * Maintain established center policies, procedures and objectives as well as quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control policies. * Provides assistance and consultation to radiation oncologist as required, requested or indicated. * Performs quality assurance testing on all radiation therapy equipment to assure compliance and accuracy for billing of continuing physics for all medical radiation physics, dosimetry, and treatment devices. Takes necessary steps to ensure that the equipment is maintained in appropriate working conditions. * Checks all patient charts weekly and within three days of the start of treatment for accuracy, completeness and compliance with the patient's prescription. Makes necessary corrections and changes as appropriate. Also checks all patients' chart at the end of treatment for completeness. * Performs computerized dose calculations and provides the isodose plans to the radiation oncologist within two working days of request. Conformal and IMRT plans within five working days. * Actively participates in physician directed chart rounds. * Participates in development of new treatment techniques in radiation therapy. * Leak tests and assays the radioactive sealed sources used by the radiation oncologist that have a half-life longer than 6 months as required by the medical center's radioactive materials license. * Maintain all quality assurance records required in connection with the use of radiation therapy equipment. * Adheres to the charge accumulation process implemented for the Radiation Oncology Center and appropriately notes the charges for services performed in the center. * Orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel. Supervises physics staff. Completes performance evaluations and recommends salary adjustment in accordance with South Pasadena CC policy and procedures. * Interviews candidates for assigned staff positions and participates in decision to hire and retain staff for those positions. * Serves as radiation safety officer for the center and is responsible for the center's radioactive material license. Represents the Radiation Oncology Center at the Radiation Safety Committee meetings. * Provides necessary in-services to the center staff on radiation therapy physics and radiation safety related topics. * Assists in the development of center policies and procedures that pertain to physics in conjunction with the South Pasadena Cancer Center office. Assumes responsibility for interpreting policies, procedures and standards to the physics staff. * Advises and consults for the Radiation Oncology Center in regards to the potential purchase and installation of radiation oncology equipment, including accelerators, simulators and treatment planning computers. * Assists the Radiation Oncology Center in the development of practices that will facilitate cost effective patient care processes. * Provides brachytherapy physics services. * Assays sample of the radioactive materials, with half-life of less than six months, before use. * Performs annual calibration of linear accelerators and simulators as required by JCAHO, ACR and state law. Contracts for yearly ALARA reports. * Assists in the coordination of consulting services for or commissions new radiation therapy equipment, such as treatment planning computers, linear accelerators, etc. * Participates in center's performance improvement committee and coordinates physics performance improvement studies. * Participates in educational programs and in-service meeting as appropriate. * Attends meeting as required Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration: * Master's degree in medical physics or related field. * Minimum five (5) years clinical experience Required Certification/Licensure: * American Board of Radiology in Radiation Therapy Physics and/or American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics.
