The Position

We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.

At Genentech Research & Early Development (gRED) we have initiated an exciting journey to bring together and further strengthen our computational talent and capabilities by forming a new, central organization - gRED Computational Sciences (gCS). gCS is on a mission to partner across the organization to realize the potential of data, technology and computational approaches that will revolutionize how targets and therapeutics are discovered and developed, ultimately enabling novel treatments for patients across the world. We stand at the beginning of an exciting journey.

The Computational Catalysts group within gCS is a diverse, curious and action-driven team at the intersection of computation, engineering and science with ambition to advance our technical excellence. The focus of the team is on partnering with the informatics and scientific communities to create a computational and data ecosystem that powers scientific discovery and accelerates decision making. We aim to modernize our ability to acquire, store, link, share, find and analyze data across the organization through scalable and integrated solutions that make every data point count. Reporting directly to the VP, Computational Catalysts and as a member of the Computational Catalysts Leadership Team (LT) the Domain Head

  • Lab to Insights will, in conjunction with leadership level stakeholders both within gCS and across gRED, play a key role in co-creating overarching computational strategies and ensuring achievement of high priority outcomes and impact, which will underpin work across the entire Computational Catalysts Organization.

The Domain Head

  • Lab to Insights is a well-established and highly credible visionary and leader who provides strategic leadership to the Computational Catalyst organization, has outstanding collaboration capabilities, and can influence without authority. You will focus on establishing close working relationships and ensuring alignment with stakeholders from across gCS (including Computational Biology and Translation) and gRED working on establishing basic biological insights that will underpin the identification of novel targets and mechanisms of action. Examples of such applications include the tracking, monitoring and registration of in vivo and in vitro model data and the generation of large scale genomics and imaging datasets. Recognized as a thought leader in your field, and through building strong partnerships with data generators in Early Stage Research, Development Sciences and Translational Medicine, as well as global stakeholders in pRED and across the broader Roche Group, you will co-create computational strategies, define high priority outcomes and impact, and ensure they are reflected in the Catalyst project portfolio. You will provide matrix leadership to multiple Computational Catalyst teams assigned to efforts in this domain to enable and coordinate achievement of outcomes and ensure delivery of impact for our stakeholders. You will partner closely with other leaders in gCS, gRED and globally in pRED to identify and capitalize on potential synergies between strategies and solutions. You will also be responsible for understanding and articulating stakeholder needs so they are well understood within the Catalysts organization and more broadly across gCS and gRED. Finally, as a member of the Catalysts LT, the Domain Head will be responsible for working with the other LT members and the VP to ensure the successful implementation of the Lab to Insight computational strategies and outcomes while always thinning into the future to define forward-thinking solutions to address emerging needs.

The Opportunity:

  • Strategic leadership and decision making on the high priority outcomes and impact in the "lab to insights" domain and member of the Computational Catalysts LT.

  • Defining computational strategies in partnership with our stakeholders in gCS, Early Stage Research, Development Sciences and Translational Medicine, as well as global stakeholders in pRED and across the broader Roche Group.

  • Establishing and fostering strong and trusted internal and external partnerships with leaders and stakeholders in Computational Catalysts, gCS and beyond; Could hold a position on other Leadership Teams across gRED.

  • Making prioritization decisions (e.g. based on impact) as well as decisions to start and stop efforts.

  • Providing inspiring matrix leadership to Catalyst team members and ensuring successful and impactful delivery of outcomes in the "lab to insights" domain.

  • Partnering and collaborating closely with other leaders in gCS, gRED and globally in pRED to identify and capitalize on potential synergies across strategies and solutions.

  • Experience forming and cultivating a new team within a complex organizational setting.

  • A strong understanding of the "lab to insights" domain including the tracking, monitoring and registration of in vivo and in vitro model data and the generation of large scale genomics and imaging datasets.

  • Expert level experience and deep understanding of cutting edge experimental techniques and the type of data generated by modern high-throughput technologies that are increasingly prevalent in the biological sciences.

  • Experience directly or indirectly leading large, often global, cross-functional and inter-disciplinary projects that have many distinct stakeholders and that require the linkage and flow of complex and diffuse experimental datasets.

  • Outstanding collaboration and partnering skills with internal and external stakeholders across all levels of the organization.

  • Proven ability to work effectively in a collaborative team culture and working environment and role-models shared leadership and co-creation.

  • Thrives as a strategic leader through ambiguity, and is able to identify opportunities and bring clarity and pathways forward to team.
