If so, then the Dock Attendant position is for you!

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance and repair of dock facilities and equipment; provides responsible customer service at the Lake Poway Recreation Area, including advising on regulations pertaining to Lake Poway use and fishing techniques and ensuring safe use of equipment; and performs related work as required.

Receives general supervision from the Recreation Area Manager or assigned supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. May provide technical and functional direction to volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

  • Provides responsible customer service at the Lake Poway Recreation Area, including assisting patrons with equipment operation, acting as a resource person to patrons on fishing techniques, and informing patrons of the regulations pertaining to using Lake Poway.

  • Maintains the dock area including adjusting dock levels, clearing the shoreline of debris, emptying trash receptacles, securing boats during high winds, removing water from boats, installing boat cushions, repairing boat chains, and clearing gangway area.

  • Maintains dock facilities and equipment, including lubricating equipment, painting facilities, removing and replacing running lights, and repairing and replacing boards, bumper guards, and dock boxes.

  • Maintains and repairs the boats including removing and charging dead batteries, checking battery fluid levels, maintaining battery chargers, checking propellers, checking and replacing electrical boat motors, and inspecting and repairing hulls; sands, primes, and paints boat seats; maintains City's patrol boat.

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots, repairs, replaces, and maintains electrical motors.

  • Inspects fishing and boating permits; weighs fish caught; records weight; removes fish hooks from fish.

  • Administers basic first aid and CPR as necessary.

  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work assignment as instructed.

  • Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.

  • Maintains public facilities, dock and lake areas, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.

  • Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.

  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.

  • May provide technical and functional direction to volunteers and/or community service workers.

  • Attendance and punctuality that is observant of scheduled hours on a regular basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements/License or Certificates Required

Any combination of the following education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this classification.

Experience:

Six months of customer service experience, which is considered 500 hours. Experience in construction, maintenance, and repair and working with power and hand tools is desirable.

Education/Training:

Must be at least 16 years old. Training in mechanical maintenance, repair and/or construction desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid California class C driver's license with satisfactory driving record.

  • Within five months of appointment,satisfactory completion of First Aid and CPR/AED certificates are required.

Physical Demands

Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment.Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites.Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with assistance or the use of proper equipment.

Environmental Elements

Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.Employees may be exposed to blood and body fluids when rendering First Aid and CPR.Employees are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned.Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives, and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

May be required to work various shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Examination Process

Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of relevant training and experience as presented in the application and supplemental questions. The following criteria will be used in the screening process: Writing Skills (grammar, spelling, punctuation) - suitable and appropriate for position; Work Experience - consistent, compatible and applicable for the position; and Supplemental Questions - content is inclusive and congruent with the position. The process may include interviews and/or performance tests. Successful candidates will be placed on the eligibility list, which will be in effect for a period of six months. A background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting, pre-employment physical that includes a drug screening and tuberculosis screening, reference checking, and verification of previous employment and educationarerequired. Applicants will be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. The City of Poway participates in E-Verify. All employees are required by law to sign a loyalty oath to the United States and the State of California Constitution at time of hire.
