BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Docent/Tour Guide will work at four historic sites in Ellicott City. They will oversee operation of tours, special events, site set-up and clean-up as required. Docents will interact with the public to provide a successful visitor experience.


  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

  • Lead, oversee, and provide historically accurate tours at the Ellicott City Colored School, Restored; Firehouse Museum; Log Cabin; and Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park.

  • Become educated in Ellicott City and Howard County history and provide informative, educational presentations, focusing on an inclusive history of the area.

  • Be able to answer questions about each site, as needed.

  • Meet and greet visitors at our sites.

  • Give visitors explanation of rules and regulations.

  • Perform site inspection and insure that site is returned to original condition.

  • Patrol ground and provide security

  • Must be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

  • Answer onsite phone and report site issues to supervisor as needed.

  • Keep site clean of debris and trash, and wipe down high-touch areas of plexiglass, doors and windows as needed.

  • Attend seasonal staff meetings.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Excellent communication skills/and interaction with public.

  • General knowledge of the history of Ellicott City and Howard County.

  • Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time.

  • Must enjoy working with the public.

SALARY: Contingent

  • Paraprofessional

  • 10 hours per week

$15.00/hour starting rate

Activities include a variety of sports and games.</p><p>Flexible work schedule based on availability. Hours available: Mon-Thursday 3-6 pm, Saturdays and Sundays.</p><p>DUTIES:</p><ul><li><p>Assist in the organization and supervision of a sports program/camp.</p></li><li><p>Provide written reports and attend scheduled meetings as required.</p></li><li><p>Set up and take down program equipment.</p></li><li><p>Assist in coordinating daily lesson plans to show progression of skill.</p></li><li><p>Maintain positive communication with parents, school staff, the public and Sports Coordinator</p></li><li><p>Responsible for the safety and general welfare of the program and participants.</p></li><li><p>Must satisfy requirements of the Recreation and Parks Coaches Registry upon employment and prior to being scheduled by supervisor. Coaches Registry requirements include completion of the American Sport Education Program and recommended Concussions in Youth Sport exams.</p></li></ul><p>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: (Must be at least 16 years old)</p><ul><li><p>Sound philosophy of coaching and teaching with emphasis on fun and development of skills.</p></li><li><p>Personal skills in sport activities specific to position.</p></li><li><p>Ability to demonstrate sports skills, give positive and effective feedback to participants and parents.</p></li><li><p>Ability to teach sports skills to youth participants in age appropriate settings.</p></li><li><p>Ability to teach sports skills with introductions, demonstrations, verbal instructions and to give positive and effective feedback to participants and parents.</p></li><li><p>Knowledge of age and ability adaptations for activities to ensure equal participation and success.</p></li><li><p>Ability to communicate and gain control over a large group of children.</p></li></ul><p>EXPERIENCE:</p><p>Leader I: Participation in sports, some background working with children's programs. Meets Coaches Registry requirements.</p><p>Leader II: Knowledge of sports skills specific to position, background in coaching sports skills and/or leading children's activities, CPR and First Aid certified.</p><p>EDUCATION: Course work specific to Recreation and/or Physical Education.</p><p>RATE OF PAY: Contingent - Salary commensurate with experience and certification</p><p>Leader I: Minimum Wage (Paraprofessional)</p><p>Leader II: $15.00-$20.00/hour (Paraprofessional)</p><br> Howard County Government Columbia MD
