BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Docent/Tour Guide will work at four historic sites in Ellicott City. They will oversee operation of tours, special events, site set-up and clean-up as required. Docents will interact with the public to provide a successful visitor experience.


  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

  • Lead, oversee, and provide historically accurate tours at the Ellicott City Colored School, Restored; Firehouse Museum; Log Cabin; and Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park.

  • Become educated in Ellicott City and Howard County history and provide informative, educational presentations, focusing on an inclusive history of the area.

  • Be able to answer questions about each site, as needed.

  • Meet and greet visitors at our sites.

  • Give visitors explanation of rules and regulations.

  • Perform site inspection and insure that site is returned to original condition.

  • Patrol ground and provide security

  • Must be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

  • Answer onsite phone and report site issues to supervisor as needed.

  • Keep site clean of debris and trash, and wipe down high-touch areas of plexiglass, doors and windows as needed.

  • Attend seasonal staff meetings.


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Excellent communication skills/and interaction with public.

  • General knowledge of the history of Ellicott City and Howard County.

  • Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time.

  • Must enjoy working with the public.

SALARY: Contingent

  • 10 hours per week

$15.00/hour starting rate

Application of basic horticultural and landscaping principles.</p><p>STARTING SALARY HIRING RANGE:</p><p>$17.69 - $18.59</p><p>$36,795 - $38,667</p><p>CLASS DESCRIPTION:</p><p>This is semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance of park lands and related facilities and structures. Work involves the use of a variety of tools and equipment and the application of basic horticultural and landscaping principles.</p><p>Work is performed with general supervision from a crew leader. An employee in this class works with others to accomplish an assigned part of Park operations in grounds maintenance, sports field preparation, construction, or park-site management. Assignments are stable in nature and are carried out in accordance with instructions and established routines. Work may include considerable public contact.</p><p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p><p>Include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.</p><ul><li><p>Works and cooperates with co-workers and supervisors at all levels.</p></li><li><p>Learns and performs all essential job functions accurately.</p></li><li><p>Understand cultural needs of specific plants andprovidesthe appropriate landscape maintenance needed for a given site.</p></li><li><p>Duties includes the operation of vehicles up to and including 1-ton vehicles with trailers, zero-turn mowing units, skid loaders, and backhoes. Operate in heights of 50 feet in bucket units.Also a variety of small equipment such as walk-behind and push mowers, aerators, seeders, spreaders, line trimmer/brush cutters, chain saws, blowers, gas shears, edgers, chippers, leaf-vacs, etc.</p></li><li><p>To be able to operate a chainsaw properly and safely according to ANSI safety and industry standards.</p></li><li><p>To be able to handle traffic control by flagging and properly setting up minor road control systems.</p></li><li><p>Performs and assists in skilled gardening and landscaping worksuch as pruning,weeding, planting, mulching, watering, brush cutting, chipping, and tree felling and removal following Proper Horticultural Practices.</p></li><li><p>Assists with a broad variety of turf maintenance tasks such as, mowing, fertilization, sodding and seeding operations following Proper Horticultural Practices,</p></li><li><p>Utilizing Integrated Pest Management practices to apply pesticides for weed, insect and disease control in turf and or landscapes following Maryland State laws.</p></li><li><p>Alsoassists with trail maintenance, field and meadow mowing, vandalism repair and other tasks associated with park maintenance such as, trash removal,and snow removal.</p></li><li><p>Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and vehicles and fills out repair request.</p></li><li><p>Ability to utilize a GPS device and decipher information.</p></li><li><p>Serves on committees as assigned.</p></li><li><p>This position is considered essential and will be required to work emergency situations to include staffing the Department Operations Center.</p></li><li><p>Performs snow removal duties and assists during inclement weather conditions to include working for Public Works if needed.</p></li><li><p>Attends trainings as assigned.</p></li><li><p>Responsible for identifying and applying good sustainability practices into all aspects of Department operations.</p></li></ul><p>SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:</p><p>This job has no supervisory responsibilities. May lead the work of subordinate crew members, part-time staff and volunteers.</p><p>MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE</p><p>Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 10th grade plus one (1) year of experience in landscaping, park maintenance, or a related field; or, completion of course work in horticulture or park/resource management plus one (1) year of general laboring experience.</p><p>PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:</p><p>One (1) year certificate from college or technical school; or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.</p><ul><li><p>To have the experience to operate a chainsaw properly and safely according to ANSI safety and industry standards.</p></li><li><p>Strong interest in Horticulture.</p></li><li><p>Experience working with and knowledge of Mid-Atlantic plants and landscaping.</p></li></ul><p>PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:</p><p>The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATIONS</p><p>Possession of a valid driver's license. This license must be valid as long as the individual is employed in this class.</p><p>Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License may be required depending upon job assignment and must be obtained with department time frames and maintained during tenure of employment.</p><p>Certified in forklift, bucket lift, flagging, CPR and first aid or the ability to obtain certification within time limits specified by the County.</p><br> Howard County Government Columbia MD
