POSITION SUMMARY/CLASS DESCRIPTION

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Docent/Tour Guide will work at four historic sites in Ellicott City. They will oversee operation of tours, special events, site set-up and clean-up as required. Docents will interact with the public to provide a successful visitor experience.

DUTIES:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

  • Lead, oversee, and provide historically accurate tours at the Ellicott City Colored School, Restored; Firehouse Museum; Log Cabin; and Patapsco Female Institute Historic Park.

  • Become educated in Ellicott City and Howard County history and provide informative, educational presentations, focusing on an inclusive history of the area.

  • Be able to answer questions about each site, as needed.

  • Meet and greet visitors at our sites.

  • Give visitors explanation of rules and regulations.

  • Perform site inspection and insure that site is returned to original condition.

  • Patrol ground and provide security

  • Must be comfortable working independently and as part of a team.

  • Answer onsite phone and report site issues to supervisor as needed.

  • Keep site clean of debris and trash, and wipe down high-touch areas of plexiglass, doors and windows as needed.

  • Attend seasonal staff meetings.

QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Excellent communication skills/and interaction with public.

  • General knowledge of the history of Ellicott City and Howard County.

  • Must be able to walk long distances and stand for long periods of time.

  • Must enjoy working with the public.

SALARY: Contingent

  • 10 hours per week

$15.00/hour starting rate

Come work with teens and adults with mild to severe disabilities in evening and weekend therapeutic recreation programs designed to provide enrichment and social opportunities that meet their needs and interest and skills. Activities include community outings, fine arts, bowling leagues, and fitness.</p><ul><li><p>Applicant must be 18 years old.</p></li><li><p>Experience required with adults with developmental disabilities. Flexibility, patience, energetic and upbeat attitude is a must.</p></li><li><p>Salary ranges from minimum wage to $25.00 per hour depending on experience.</p></li><li><p>Work hours are evening and weekend opportunities; seasonal programs are 6-8 weeks.</p></li><li><p>Location varies depending on program and schedule.</p></li></ul><p>BRIEF DESCRIPTION:The Department provides evening and weekend programs for teens and adults with disabilities who require supervision. The program includes recreational activities of sports and games, drama and dance, arts and crafts, community outings, and leisure education, swimming, and drama.</p><p>ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES</p><p>Assist the Manager and Coordinator with the implementation and supervision of programs during evening and weekend hours for teens and adults with mild to severe disabilities. Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians. Maintain behavior protocols and meet with support staff when necessary. Assist participants with activities of daily living. Encourage age-appropriate activities. Work as a team with all staff and support personnel. Assist with paperwork. Maintain safe environment.</p><p>MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE</p><p>SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 18 years of age. Must hold a high school diploma, or certificate of high school equivalence, or have successfully completed courses for credit from an accredited college. Must possess or be able to obtain certification in Standard First Aid and Infant &amp; Child CPR. Ability to communicate effectively with individuals with disabilities of any level and be flexible.</p><p>EXPERIENCE: Experience working with individuals with disabilities. One year (30 credits) of college, OR a combination of experience and college equaling one year.</p><p>EDUCATION: Must have high school diploma, or certificate of high school equivalence, one year of college preferred in education, recreation, child development or related fields.
