Job Summary

A position is available immediately for a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. Kyle Bittinger at the CHOP Microbiome Center.

The project focuses on developing computational approaches to study the influence of the human microbiome on inflammatory bowel disease. The CHOP Microbiome Center collaborates with a number of researchers in this area, and must develop new analysis methods to take advantage of data from shotgun metagenomic DNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. We envision that this project will be devoted to both computational methods development and application of new methods in collaborative research projects.

The candidate should have experience with analysis of metagenomic DNA sequencing data, and should also be familiar with bioinformatic and statistical approaches relevant to the human microbiome. Furthermore, the candidate should be able to develop reliable and maintainable software with standard approaches such as unit testing, version control, and continuous integration.

The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with the PennCHOP Microbiome Program (https://pennchopmicrobiome.chop.edu/). Salary will be commensurate with experience and follow NIH salary guidelines. A minimum of a two year commitment is requested.

Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct independent scholarly research and develop new methods and protocols

  • Participate in project planning, recording and evaluation of data

  • Acquire technical, lab management and grant writing skills

  • Participate in seminars, lectures, poster sessions and presentation at national meetings

  • Supervise junior lab members

  • Assist with other research projects

  • A terminal degree PhD, MD, DVM, etc.

  • According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Additional Technical Requirements

All CHOP employees who work in a patient building or who provide patient care are required to receive an annual influenza vaccine unless they are granted a medical or religious exemption.

The Program's mission is to develop microbiome-based strategies that generate biomarkers or therapeutics to improve health and treat disease. The position requires experience in DNA purification, amplification, and sequencing. Experience with programming and statistical analysis is also desirable. Salary is commensurate with experience. A two year commitment is requested. Job Responsibilities * Performs lab tests which require the analysis of results and interpretation of methods * Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed * Assists with planning specific research protocols and procedures * Assists in development & troubleshooting of new techniques and ideas * Modifies methods and protocols under the direction of the PI * Formulates and performs complex lab experiments and analyzes & reports the data * Presents & discusses work at weekly lab meetings * Prepares laboratory reagents and monitors and maintains inventory * Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log books and lab notebooks * Assists in writing methods and setting-up protocols accurately under the direction of the program director or senior scientist * Maintains laboratory equipment, safety procedures and compliance records * Researches journal, white papers and other scientific publications for pertinent information * Assists with the preparation of data for publication or presentation at symposia * May supervises junior members of laboratory.
