What You Will Be Doing

The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is recruiting a Division Operations Manager to effectively manage the division's internal operations. The successful candidate will supervise the division´s administrative staff and section chiefs, construct and implement the division´s annual budget, allocate and approve human and fiscal resources, lead internal and external meetings, establish close relationships with collaborative partners, coordinate and write Division reports, analyze data, present findings, and make recommendations to assist the Director in developing goals and funding options for the division´s geoscience programs.

Mission and Culture

DGGS' mission is to determine the potential of Alaskan land for the production of metals, minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction materials, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations and structures (Alaska Statute 41.08.020). DGGS has multiple sections to serve the state's needs, including Energy Resources, Mineral Resources, Geologic Hazards, Hydrology & Surficial Geology, Volcanology, and our Geologic Materials Center; all are supported by our Geologic Information Center and Administrative sections. The incumbent will provide oversight and direction to facilitate all sections in successfully implementing their parts of our division's mission. The State's Alaska Geospatial Office is also housed at DGGS under the Director.

The Working Environment You Can Expect

This position is based in the main DGGS office in Fairbanks, Alaska. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an 8-hour daily work schedule. The work environment is open, informal, and collaborative. Our professional geological/geophysical staff is supported by our wonderful Administrative and Geologic Information Center staff, the latter of which meets our IT, database, GIS, publication, and website needs.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a candidate who possesses excellent leadership, management, problem-solving, strategic thinking, budgeting, analysis, and communication skills.

In addition to the standard Minimum Qualifications, the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are REQUIRED for this position: These items must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile.   • Supervise, coordinate, problem-solve, motivate, and lead staff to accomplish goals/objectives.

  • Seek funding by conceptualizing, writing, and/or supervising others in writing proposals for grants, capital and operating requests, and/or other fund sources.

  • Develop, manage, justify, allocate, review, approve, track, and oversee large, complex budgets utilizing enterprise-level budgeting software systems.

  • Coordinate and lead meetings, set goals, maintain group focus to meet objectives, and synthesize results.

  • Research, compile, analyze, and synthesize information and clearly communicate ideas and results in written, verbal, statistical, spreadsheet, graphical, map, and presentation formats for technical and general audiences.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of professional experience in the broad occupational fields of the division or department and two years of supervisory and/or managerial experience, which may be concurrent with the professional experience.

Special Note:

"Professional experience in the broad occupational fields of the division or department," means experience in one of the professional areas that compose the division's purpose and function to ensure the applicant has the knowledge of the work of the division to be managed.

For example, in an administrative services division, qualifying professional experience could be in any one of the professional areas that compose business administration; such as accounting, procurement, human resources, and so on.

In a line division, for example the Division of Mining, Land, & Water in the Department of Natural Resources, qualifying experience could be in any one of the professional areas that provide for the use and protection of Alaska's State-owned land and water, such as geology, hydrology, forestry, natural resource management, and so on.
