Safety/Security Sensitive Designation:

This is a safety/security sensitive position for purposes of the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment.

  • Provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees (especially members of their own team), and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive.

  • Perform supervisory responsibilities which may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws.

  • Provide strong leadership to department personnel, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.

  • Perform all management functions for assigned division of the department, including but not limited to, Operations, Support, Fire Prevention, and Training.

  • Build and foster relationships with both internal and external stakeholders of the department.

  • Interact with the public to represent and speak on behalf of the Fayetteville Fire Department.

  • Prepare an annual budget and monitor expenditures.

  • Prepare and maintain strategic plan for assigned division.

  • This position is responsible to perform job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect the health and safety of the citizens of the City of Fayetteville.

  • Facilitate needed communications between divisions within the department and other departments.

  • Oversight for proper operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment.

  • Oversee completion of training exercises and officer development.

  • Evaluate effectiveness of groups and individuals and adjust/train as required.

  • Oversee special projects, equipment evaluation, and program development.

  • Regularly participate in either group or self-directed physical fitness activities.

  • Participate in local, regional, state, and national conferences.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Secondary duties as assigned.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus completion of at least ten (10) years of continuous service with the Fayetteville Fire Department immediately preceding the date of the first promotional interview and has successfully attained and held the rank of Battalion Chief with the Fayetteville Fire Department for one (1) year immediately preceding the date of the first promotional interview.  A transcript from an accredited institution documenting a minimum of twelve (12) hours of completed college coursework with at least a "C" average may substitute for a high school diploma or GED certificate.  After December 31, 2024, a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university will be required.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

  • Necessary certificates, licenses and registrations include: IFSAC Firefighter I & II, and must maintain EMT certification.

  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

  • Ability to react quickly and effectively in all emergencies, natural or man-caused disasters.

  • Must be proficient in the use of a computer and other related software programs. Must be able to effectively operate standard office equipment.

  • Effectively communicate with others orally and in writing.

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  • While performing the functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear.  The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.   The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to extremes in weather conditions; possible injury while riding on emergency vehicles or operating department equipment; hazards inherent to fire, hazardous materials, special rescue scene situations and emergency medical incidents. The noise level in the working environment is frequently loud. Mental stress generated by involvement in life and death situations; cardiovascular stress generated by movement from resting to highly active states
