Duties and Responsibilities

  • *Maintain, inspect, service and ensure readiness of Diving Safety Program (DSP) equipment; including scuba compressor and fill station, and extensive diving locker including closed-circuit rebreathers and other equipment for technical diving.

  • *Maintain equipment service and inventory control records for DSP equipment and support facilities. Establish maintenance schedules and procedures in compliance with national codes of practice and manufacturers' requirements.

  • *Provide diving equipment inspection services to UH departments and scientific divers as assigned. Act as liaison between UH research divers and equipment vendors. Advise UH divers on gear suitability, maintenance, and repair.

  • *Provide support of diving operations by: operating small craft, providing topside support; participating in DSP research missions, as needed and assigned.

  • *Provide scientific diver training by teaching sections of the Scientific Diver Course in areas of specialty, and supervising and supporting diver training activities as needed and assigned.

  • *Maintain cost-effort statistics, develop annual budget requests and recommendations for equipment and supplies. Initiate program equipment procurement.

  • *Ensure compliance with government and community safety standards within area of specialization. Make recommendations regarding suitability or serviceability of equipment for research diving.

  • *Maintain, inspect and ensure readiness of Diving Safety Program dive boats, boat motors, trailers, and vehicles.

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in natural science, physical science, engineering, or social science or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for scientific research/educational diving operations, diving equipment and facilities maintenance, and small craft operations in support of science; or any equivalent combination of education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of research diving operations, equipment and facilities maintenance in support of scientific diving as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.

  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with scientific diving activities.

  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

  • Scientific Diver training and qualification from an AAUS Organizational Member institution or equivalent (NOAA Working Diver; NPS Blue Card, etc.).

  • One (1) year experience in diving supervision and diving related safety operations in an academic setting or research environment.

  • Considerable knowledge of compressed-gas diving technology; including repair and maintenance of diving life-support gear, SCUBA air compressors and underwater-research equipment.

  • Qualified repair technician for major brands of diving equipment, as evidenced by manufacturers' certificates of training (Aqualung, Apeks, Oceanic, Hollis, Atomic, etc.).

  • Certified Visual Cylinder Inspector (PSI or CTS)

  • Considerable experience operating Class 1 small craft as research platforms in open near-coastal ocean conditions, including trailering and launching. Possession of State of Hawaii Motorboat Operator's License, or ability to obtain before employment.

  • Considerable knowledge of and experience in routine boat, outboard motor, and compressor maintenance and repair.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience with service and maintenance of electronically controlled closed-circuit rebreathers (APD Systems preferred).

  • Experience with use/maintenance of additional specialized diving equipment such as hookah, full-face masks (AGA), surface-supplied systems, diving helmets, underwater wireless communications, and/or diver propulsion devices, etc.

  • Certified EMT/DMT, Paramedic and/or Recompression Chamber Operator.

  • Currently certified SCUBA instructor by a nationally recognized diving agency (NAUI highly preferred, others considered) and experience teaching compressed-gas diving in an academic setting.

  • Certified CPR/First Aid and/or DAN Oxygen Administration Instructor.

  • Certified Small Craft Operator by a recognized training entity (USCG Licensed Captain, USCG Auxiliary, US Power Squadron, US DOI, NOAA, etc.).

  • Certified diving gas mixer/blender and/or oxygen service technician

  • Visual Cylinder Inspector Trainer (CTS or PSI)
