JOB SUMMARY: Supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the vehicle services personnel engaged in setting up, installing, repairing, and maintaining vehicles, buses and equipment and enforces all safety regulations, shop rules and personnel work relations.

  • Conducts inspections and prepares maintenance schedules for assigned vehicles and ensures quality of work performed. Coordinates, supervises and ensures completion of preventative maintenance of shop equipment.

    Requisitions and maintains supply of spare parts. Interprets district policy and enforces safety regulations. Maintains computerized logs of job assignments, compilations, materials, and equipment used. Recommends measures to improve production methods to increase efficiency of shop and work crew.

  • Supervises crew and shop areas in an effective and cost efficient manner. Minimizes customer downtime, maintains customer and employee relations.

    Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates all shop personnel. Maintains equipment and facilities; follows safety and contamination control practices.

  • Utilizes computer system and Internet to accurately create, track and complete work order repairs including the tracking of time (labor hours), parts used, and work completed. Locates technical information on the Intranet or vendor websites.

  • Effectively communicates shop activities to those who need to know on a real-time basis. Coordinates with all other departments in HISD as necessary to ensure shop activities are properly and effectively integrated. Coordinates with all applicable HISD vendors to maintain the proper flow of information for planning and day-to-day operations.

  • Keeps shop personnel informed and motivated toward specific objectives and day-to-day responsibilities; makes equitable decisions regarding regular and incidental compensation awards.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

WORK EXPERIENCE: 5 to 7 years

TYPE OF SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION: SAP, Microsoft Office Office equipment (e.g., computer, copier), Hand tools (e.g., hammer, shovel, screwdriver), Power tools (e.g., radial saw, reciprocating saw, drill, pheunomatic hammer), Vehicles (e.g., automobile, truck, tractor, forklift) Class B CDL with Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, TAPT, TASBT, and ASE certifications


Regularly provides project management or team leadership to a group of two or more employees, but does not have formal supervisory responsibility. Leading and directing typically involves monitoring work and providing guidance on escalated issues. Most of work time is spent performing many of same duties they are leading.

WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work involves the application of moderately complex procedures and tasks that are quite varied.

Independent judgment is often required to select and apply the most appropriate of available resources. Ongoing supervision is provided on an "as needed" basis.

BUDGET AUTHORITY: No budget development activity is required.

PROBLEM SOLVING: Decisions are made on both routine and non-routine matters with some latitude, but are still subject to approval. Job is occasionally expected to recommend new solutions to problems and improve existing methods or generate new ideas.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS: Decisions have minor, small and possibly incremental impact on the department or facility. Errors are usually discovered in succeeding operations where most of the work is verified or checked and is normally confined to a single department or phase of the organizational activities resulting in brief inconvenience.

COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS: Information sharing - gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instructions and reporting results. Interactions are mostly with customers, own supervisor and coworkers in own and other departments.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS: Takes routine or required customer actions to meet customer needs.

Responds promptly and accurately to customer complaints, inquiries and requests for information and coordinates appropriate follow-up. May handle escalated issues passed on from coworkers or subordinates.

WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work involves frequent exposure to unpleasant elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noise, chemicals, etc. Ability to carry and/or lift 45 pounds or more.
