Under general supervision from Transportation Supervisor, performs technical and skilled journey level duties in the maintenance and repair of school buses, automobiles, and other motorized vehicles. Performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assigns and participates in the inspection and diagnosis of mechanical defects in District school buses, trucks, vans and cars;

Evaluates drivers' complaints; determines units to be dismantled;

Maintain service schedules and order proper replacement parts for all equipment. Does repairs and overhauls on engines, transmissions, drive units, brakes, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, generators, electrical systems, instrumentation and other necessary power equipment;

Utilizes a variety of diagnostic equipment such as ammeters, voltmeters and gauges;

Utilizes hand and power tools to replace or repair parts.

In cooperation with the Transportation Supervisor, reviews work in progress and completed work to insure compliance with work order specifications and departmental policies;

Maintains records and reports on personnel activities and maintenance and repair work performed;

Makes service calls and emergency repairs;

Perform emergency bus driving duties as needed.

Insures that shop facility is maintained in a safe and clean condition.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge of:
Principles, methods, materials and tools used in automotive and mechanical testing and repair, troubleshoot and overhaul for gasoline engines, diesel engines, transmissions, front and rear ends
Electrical systems and hydraulics and wheel lifts;
Occupational hazards and safety precautions of automotive and mechanical work;
Use and care of hand and power tools;
Nevada codes, regulations and rules applicable to maintenance and operation of vehicles in the transportation of children.
Ability to:
Work independently;
Performing journey level mechanic activities in diagnosing and repairing mechanical defects;
Utilizing standard mechanical, diagnostic and welding tools and equipment; reading, interpreting and following mechanical drawings, diagrams and technical repair manuals;
Observe safety practices;
Understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; performing manual labor;
Maintaining necessary written records and reports;
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in course of work.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Four (4) years journey level automotive mechanic or heavy duty equipment repair experience;

OR

Completion of a recognized two (2) year automotive mechanic or heavy duty equipment repair apprenticeship program.

AND
Two (2) years journey level automotive mechanic experience or heavy-duty equipment repair.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
