Job Summary (Primary purpose of this Role):

John Hancock's Insurance division (a Division of Manulife) has traditionally focused on affluent and emerging affluent individuals by providing estate and business planning solutions through an array of innovative life insurance products. The position of Distribution Analytics Associate is a key member of a cross-functional team responsible for delivering advanced analytics solutions to our distribution team. The successful candidate will bring a mindset for critical thinking, curiosity, and passion for delivering advanced analytics solutions to our distribution team.

This position reports to the AVP, Advanced Analytics, John Hancock Insurance.

Key Accountabilities (Allocate the % of total working time spending on each accountability, which should be added up to 100%)

Individual Accountabilities:

  • Grow annual life insurance sales through data driven insight

  • Increase the efficiency of sales team using data and analytics

  • Create persuasive visual reports for management and internal sales team highlighting opportunities to improve performance

  • Prioritize work for AA team, balancing short-term wins and high-value opportunities

  • Assist with performing data, model and result QC

  • Assist in gathering data for story communication

  • Help with data prep and data management

  • Lead cross-functional projects in support of distribution analytics

Key Shared Accountabilities:

  • Develop or manage the deployment of Artificial Intelligence that support of distribution team

  • Responsible for data delivery from both internal and external sources; interface with data experts & data sourcing resources

  • Work with a cross-functional team to collaboratively assess, understand, improve, and deliver rich data content for analysis

Job Requirement:

  • Bachelor Degree in a technical (statistics, Math, Computer Science, etc.) or business discipline or equivalent technical expertise

  • Generally, a minimum of 2 years related experience

  • Thorough understanding of data gathering, storing, and retrieval methods. Experience combining disparate data sources to generate very unique market, industry and customer insights.

  • Comfort with visual art and design to turn statistical and computational analysis into user-friendly graphs, charts, and animations. Create insightful data visualizations (e.g., motion charts, word maps) that highlight trends.

  • General knowledge in the following areas; IT concepts, strategies and methodologies, IT architectures and data standards, and general knowledge of a business function(s) and of business operations, knowledge of analysis (e.g. R, SAS, Matlab) packages, programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, Ruby) as well as exposure and experience with maintaining, and troubleshooting "Big Data" infrastructure, such as distributed processing paradigms, stream processing and databases such as Hadoop, Storm, Solr.

  • Expertise with SQL, MS Access, and other methods for manipulating relational databases.

  • Knowledge of the use of predictive analytics models (Neural Networks, Clustering, General Linear Models, etc.)


  • Strong technical knowledge of data and data concepts

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to organizational success; shares resources and leverages knowledge across the organization.

  • Adaptable and open to change

  • Strong collaboration and elaboration skills

  • Execution- able to prioritize, meet deadlines, results orientated

  • Problem Analysis- able to use information to identify cause and affect relationships, patterns, etc.
