What you will do

Responsibility for global strategy and technical leadership across multiple Business Units (BUs) in building wide algorithm development and modeling. This candidate will provide strategic technical direction and leadership across multiple Business Units to deliver emerging technologies that differentiate Johnson Controls HVAC product offerings in buildings. This individual must be an analytical thinker and be disciplined in applying robust design methodologies and engineering principles (controls, modeling, simulation, statistics, data acquisition etc.) to develop and realize innovative solutions. This individual must be self-motivated and be able to lead and collaborate with both technical contributors and department leaders across organizational lines. This individual must be very adaptable, able to deal with requirement ambiguity and pivot quickly as new learning evolves requirements. Because team members may not be collocated, exceptional English language skills (oral and written) are required. A broad breath of experience spanning research, advanced development and product engineering is required. This individual will have an extensive network of industry, university and national laboratory collaborators in the HVAC equipment, algorithm, modeling, optimization, and control domains.

The candidate provides technical leadership to generate ideas and gain customer insights to identify and develop solutions to customers stated, unstated, and future needs. Provides technology talks and lectures both internally and externally representing Johnson Controls technology and our products. Leads in the mentoring and training of existing and new mid-level engineers and the use of appropriate technologies for building control and algorithm development. Will be a technical gate keeper for the business, participating in critical design reviews to ensure compliance with new control algorithm development methods such as Model Based Design. Collaborates with global engineering directors and technology leads to identify new building HVAC technologies and concepts, as well as harvest ideas for new product developments. Works with BU's to provide an independent viewpoint in competitive benchmarking assessments and comparisons to existing JCI products. Responsible for identifying and working with strategic technical partners and building technical partnerships to facilitate the JCI BMS Advanced Development and BMS products organizations. Will work closely with other BMS leaders in providing technical due diligence on partnerships, and other M&A activities.

How you will do it

Provides technical leadership, stewardship, and technology investigations in the area of advanced algorithm development necessary to support product level roadmap decision support, participates in industry awareness and governance through both informal and formal means, including but not limited to executive level presentations, presenting JCI at industry and technology events, performing technical risk analysis and mitigation across JCI's global product BU's.

Responsibilities include:

  • Works with BMS leadership to develop new initiatives and translate them into technical implications across the global portfolio of BMS HVAC products.

  • Directs and advises overall technical development, design, quality, and accountability for complex building control products and their platforms.

  • Ensures and delivers alignment with the BU R&D leaders to define and prioritize algorithm and modeling architectures for their portfolio of products, and provides critical insight to develop strategic roadmaps.

  • Delivers technical leadership and oversees functional efforts to generate ideas and gain customer insights to identify solutions to our customers stated, unstated, and future needs.

  • Oversees technology transfer to the BMS product engineering organization(s).

  • Collaborates with global engineering directors and technology leads to identify new and differentiated control technologies and concepts, as well as harvest ideas for new product developments.

  • Identifies staffing needs and organizational structure necessary to deliver innovative solutions that differentiate JCI products and services.

  • Participates in BU level product roadmap and strategy development.

  • Deliver complex HVAC control and equipment initiatives that drive revenue and improve efficiency in line with business strategy

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of the organization's technologies and architectures

  • Initiate and deliver technology evaluations and recommendations

  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of HVAC industry best practices, technologies and R&D tools.

  • Identifies where JCI needs to engage with industry groups to represent our interests in guideline and standards development.

  • Mentors technical leaders, and R&D staff members on HVAC practices and industry norms

What we look for

Required

  • MS or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering.

  • 15+ years of design and development and/or research experience.

  • Key contributor in the release of multiple products or programs.

  • Demonstrated experience performing independent research and leading research teams.

  • Demonstrated active engagement with HVAC industry professional organizations is required as evidenced by published papers, patents, and technical committee leadership positions.

  • Experienced working with HVAC equipment & controls and system optimization technologies.

  • Experienced in the development of HVAC equipment, system, and disturbance thermodynamic and heat transfer models needed to support research and development activities

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communications skills, including the ability to communicate concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences including executive management.

  • Ability to represent the company and its offerings/technologies at both internal and external technology events.

  • Ability to sell across the organization developing compelling value propositions and evangelizing them effectively.

  • Ability to build consensus around difficult decisions through strong conceptualization, analytical and logic skills, and capability to rally stakeholders around a strategic vision.

  • Ability to network and build rapport with business and technology leaders, SMEs and influencers.

  • Technology leader, with strong technical acumen, that understands the wide spectrum building HVAC technologies and their life cycle.

  • Experience in balancing daily pressures with the need to focus on long term priorities and goals.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of discretion and personal integrity in the exercise of duties, including the ability to professionally address confidential matters.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills.

  • Proven ability to train and collaborate with other strong technical leaders and architects.

  • Ability and experience in teaming with strategic technology partners
