Under supervision of the Landfill Supervisor, this position is responsible for operating heavy equipment to compact refuse and cover with fill dirt daily at the landfill. Duties include digging new landfill pits and various earthmoving tasks necessary for refuse disposal, cleaning, performing maintenance checks on equipment and repairing minor problems daily. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, inclement weather, and overtime as needed by the department. This position is considered weather essential personnel.

  • Operates and performs daily maintenance checks on trash compactor, 23 yd. elevating scraper, backhoe, road grader, water truck and bulldozer, as needed.

  • Fuels and repairs equipment when minor problems are observed during daily inspections.

  • Assists with spotting incoming trucks and vehicles at landfill dumping site, when needed.

  • Fills in on any position or shift as required.

  • Keeps all heavy equipment clean inside and out.

  • Abides by all SWP3 and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality rules and regulations.

Minimum Requirements:

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one year experience in the operation of heavy equipment. Experience in the operation of a front-end loader, road grader, elevating scraper or bulldozer is preferred. Must be able to obtain a Class C Solid Waste License on Sanitary Landfill operation and attend a waste screening class within 2 years of employment. Valid Texas Driver's License is required; Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement is preferred The City will consider all relevant education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to operate trash compactor, 23 yd. elevating scraper, road grader, water truck, semi-tractor and trailer, backhoe, front end-loader, mechanical tools, power washer and hand tools.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skill.

  • Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems

This position is considered weather essential personnel. * Picks up plastic bags and debris from curb and places them in rear of truck. * Directs driver in backing and unloading of trucks on route and transfer station. * Assists in loading brush truck, either by stacking brush and debris in truck or operating of chipper. * Helps in cleaning of truck, interior and exterior. * Helps in cleanup and maintenance operations at the transfer station, paint shop and landfill. * Performs dumpster repairs, painting, fence repairs, landfill litter control and miscellaneous duties as required. * Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of the eighth grade. General maintenance and repairs, painting and clean up experience is preferred. A valid Texas Driver's License is required for landfill and paint shop utility workers. Will be reporting to work at the landfill, located at 16250 Bezner Road.
