This role will provide inpatient asthma education for parents of patients hospitalized with asthma and ensure health care provider's accurate completion of individualized asthma action plan and/or HMPC.

This role will include but not limited to:

  • Ensure Home Management Plan of Care (HMPC) is correctly completed with information specific to the patient

  • Review discharge instructions or AVS with patients and families

  • Review Asthma Action Plan if applicable

  • Ensure Pulmonary patients have an appointment or specialist has been notified

Summary:

The RCP in Ambulatory performs the functions of a respiratory care practitioner in direct care. This position utilizes the respiratory care process in the delivery of developmentally appropriate care and works effectively with members of the health care team, including the family in the provision of care to patients. The incumbent performs the functions of a respiratory care practitioner in direct care and utilizes the respiratory care process in the delivery of developmentally appropriate care.

Responsibilities:

  • Description of Essential Functions of the position

  • Demonstrates competence in professional practice:

    1. Utilizes established standards of evidence based care to guide practice. 2. Provides direct patient care including: mechanical ventilation, aerosol therapy, pulmonary hygience, suctioning, oxygen therapy, inhaled gases. 3. Documents patient status, patient response, and respiratory practitioner interventions accurately and clearly. 4. Provides and reinforces health teaching with patients and families. 5. Participates in multidisciplinary treatment team. 6. Preceptor for novice therapists.


    1. Utilizes available resources to impact patient care and solve practice problems.


    1. Is a member of interdisciplinary committee/project/task force.


    1. Practice contributes toward achieving Respiratory Care Vision Statement. 10. Utilizes the National Patient Safety Goals to provide a safe environment for patients. Maintains a safe environment fo r self and others. 11. Perform diagnostic testing in pulmonary lab.

  • Participates in the development of professional and educational activities:

    1. Participates in continuing educational opportunities at Children's


    1. Supports professional organization of Respiratory Care


    1. Shares pertinent information gained from professional seminars, conferences, books, or journals.


    1. Assists in identifying learning needs of staff therapist and other healthcare workers.


    1. Develops, presents and evaluates programs to meet educational needs of other healthcare workers. 6. Is a member of interdisciplinary committee/project/task force.

  • Incorporates research to clinical practice:

    1. Demonstrates knowledge of research and quality improvement activities.


    1. Reads and evaluates current research that has implications for clinical practice.


    1. Shares research findings with colleagues in order to improve clinical practice.


    1. Participates in research and quality improvement activities.

  • Asthma Management Program RCPs only:

    1. Home visits are conducted to include trigger assessment, education on the proper use of devices, and one-on-one asthma-specific education


    1. Participate in community events and outreach


    1. Occasional weekend assignments required

You may be required to float occasionally to other Children's Health locations including Dallas, Plano and THD Clinics.

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • At least 2 years full time experience following graduation from a Respiratory Care program required

At least 3 years' experience, preferably in pediatric/ neonatal care preferred

  • Associates Degree in Respiratory Care preferred

EDUCATION

  • Two-year Associate's degree or equivalent experience required

  • Four-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience preferred

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Current Texas license required

  • RRT required

  • Completion in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers (HCPs) through the American Heart Association (AHA) in accordance with their job description required

  • Effective 11/18/2020, new employees must obtain PACES certification within 6 months of hire and existing employees must obtain PACES certification by 7/1/2021 required

  • AARC Membership, NPS, CPFT or RPFT preferred

  • Asthma Management Program only: Asthma Educator certification within one and a half (1.5) years of hire required

  • Asthma Management Program only: Valid Texas driver license required
