Novartis is recruiting for Disease Area Head in the Neuroscience Therapeutic Area (Multiple Sclerosis portfolio) to be located in East Hanover, NJ and to be filled at a level commensurate with experience.

Come to an industry leader where you will help drive the US Medical strategy for development and marketed products in the Neuroscience Therapeutic Area. The selected candidate will provide disease area leadership with particular focus on Multiple Sclerosis, with critical input into the strategy, development, management, and implementation for Phase IIIB/IV product support studies for NS programs; will also be involved in providing strategic input for global development programs and registration. The position includes extensive involvement with global development colleagues, marketing and sales, including conduct of field force training, sales material development and review, presentations and leadership of advisory boards, medical communications strategy development and implementation, and meetings with major healthcare providers; with a focus on meeting the needs of a diverse set of stakeholders. The position requires longstanding clinical, medical and scientific experience in the field of neuroimmunology / Multiple Sclerosis, with a strong existing network of collaborations in the academic neuroscience community.

Additional representative responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead strategic US Medical input to Global Development on clinical development with focus on neuroinflammation / MS (Phase II - IV), pre-registration, label extension, pre- and post-market launch strategies, and life cycle management.

o develop an external engagement strategy to build, sustainable strong relationships with investigators, academic centers and the Neuroscience community, serve as face of Neuroscience therapeutic area lead for MS, be able to engage medically and scientifically on eye level; be able to expand an existing strong network in MS and neuroscience

  • Leverage experience in clinical neurology and clinical development to secure strong science in the development and launch of commercially viable products utilizing aggressive timelines; integrate scientific rigor, medical need and commercial value into compelling strategies in support of successful registration and marketing.

  • Identify and implement high value strategies for product life cycle development and expansion across the entire Novartis portfolio.

  • Contribute to the development of new indications for existing products.

  • Develop and implement reliable and high-value communication strategies for new and existing products.

  • Team responsibilities include U.S. medical affairs support for in-line and pre-launch products, including strategic and tactical planning and design, implementation and timely completion of Phase 4 studies and addressing post-marketing concerns.

  • Enable a positive team environment and interact with global clinical, scientific and marketing teams and lead by direct and indirect influence.

  • Prioritize and resource pre-market launches and post-market medical programs.

  • Successfully create a bridge between clinical development teams and provide medical expertise to the commercial product development teams.

  • U.S. and European travel required. (20-25% annually, up to 40% seasonally).

VIEW JOBS 12/11/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-03-11T00:00 Job Description Executive Director HEOR Head of Medical Access Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) has been the fastest-growing function in the pharmaceutical industry for a decade or more. The heat is on payers to identify which brands offer the best value, and many key decision makers turn to health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) to help them in their decision-making. HEOR studies influence formulary status decisions in the top 11 therapeutic area categories. Nearly two-thirds of payers expect to expand their use of HEOR for access and reimbursement decisions. The Head of Medical Access role is a customer-facing, cross-portfolio HE&OR senior and strategic leadership position that ensures HEOR research and Medical Account Management communication meets the evolving needs of the US healthcare and payer landscape by partnering cross-functionally to identify strategic opportunities that influence how care is accessed, delivered and reimbursed. The role partners with field-based Medical Account Management (MAM), HE&OR, Market Access, and Medical Affairs teams to develop innovative, targeted strategies for select national and regional accounts to address customer needs. This interface involves strategic leadership across internal functions and direct leadership of the medical access team. In addition, the role is responsible for leading the development of innovative strategies across the portfolio and across all key US national and regional accounts to address program, health services and value-demonstration related needs specific to Novartis treatments, disease states, and matters pertaining to access to care. Major Activities: o In partnership with policy and market access, identify and prioritize evolving customer and health care landscape trends based on likely impact on access to and reimbursement for Novartis' products in order to shape HEOR, US medical and access strategies o Lead the development all medical access strategies across all key national and regional accounts and ensure excellence in implementation of the strategies by the HE&OR and Medical Access team o In partnership with NIBR, develop a comprehensive analysis/approach to under-stand payer ability/willingness to pay by disease area inform drug development in-vestments o In partnership with new products and market access, identify the key clinical trial design and label requirements for developing compelling value propositions and economic models o In partnership with the MAM, market access and new product teams, develop an integrated framework and approach to drive launch excellence at national and key regional accounts by adequately addressing the customer needs. Specifically, * Understand how our customers risk stratify patients across the continuum of care, develop RWE for high risk and responder subpopulations, and develop an integrated patient/provider/payer journey platform * Developing compelling value propositions that frame customer needs with RWD and translate clinical trial outcomes into value for providers, payers and patients (e.g., 5-STAR for Part D or Value Based Purchasing for Part A) * Lead the reframing of the discussion with payers from unit cost to value (e.g., lead the development of strategies that focus on account stakeholders beyond pharmacy with responsibility for a disease state with compelling economic data) * Developing a prior authorization optimization and defense platform transferrable by disease state * Addressing customer risk challenges by combining actuarial analyses and RWD analyses * Lead the conceptualization, communication and operationalization of value based and innovative contracting initiatives across key National and Regional accounts o In partnership & alignment with the field medical teams, support the delivery of approved RWE & HE&OR evidence and engage in scientific exchange with customers in accordance with Novartis's policies governing such communications o Collaborate with select national and regional health plans, potentially inclusive of working with other customer segments (i.e. IDNs, ACOs, academic centers of excellence, government sectors, and select national and key regional healthcare systems), to identify opportunities for collaborative real-world HE&OR research to: o Assess the impact of healthcare delivery and innovative payment models o Proactively ensure that all research is fully aligned with the business, HE&OR VDPs and medical strategies and is targeting specific customer need o Identify novel databases and approaches to address key strategic questions for the purpose of relative value demonstration o Evaluate the therapeutic and economic effects of formulary policies and benefit designs for relevant analogues Key Performance Indicators: 1.Demonstrated ability to work effectively across the matrix of Novartis stake-holders (field-based Medical Account Management (MAM), Market Access, and Managed Markets teams) to shape payer strategy across Novartis's portfolio 2.Demonstrated strategic leadership across direct reports and cross-functionally to implement novel approaches to improve patient access 3.Demonstrated strategic thinking capability in conceptualizing and applying innovative access-oriented methodologies and HE&OR approaches for designing and implementing outcomes-based contracting frameworks 4.Established capability in reducing insights about customer needs to practice by shaping the strategy and execution of specific tactics that directly target these needs 5.Proven ability to effectively translate approved RWE & HE&OR information and partner with key Novartis stakeholders to address customer needs 6.Viewed as a key strategic partner to the US Medical, Market Access and Medical Affairs teams 7.Proven ability to stand in for Head of department in all access-related internal and external engagements 8.Serve as the point-person within the HE&OR function for all access and reimbursement initiatives for Novartis's portfolio of products and evolving dynamics of the US healthcare system 9.Ability to communicate effectively, manage operational challenges, and take smart risks Employment Type Regular Novartis Pharmaceuticals East Hanover NJ
