Summary of Position: The Discipleship Pastor at Indiana Wesleyan University serves to cultivate and deepen a disciple-making culture on campus. They do so in large part by giving oversight to the small group ministry of the Spiritual Formation Office. There are already nearly a thousand students participating in small groups, most of which are student-led. The Discipleship Pastor works with a select team of student leaders to empower, equip, and encourage small group leaders. The work is highly relational yet also requires administrative attentiveness. Small groups and the people who lead them are one of the most effective leadership development and discipleship pathways on IWU Campus. The Discipleship Pastor will strengthen the training and development of this important initiative.
The Discipleship Pastor is also a crucial member of the Spiritual Formation Office in all its ministries. Accordingly, they help to shape campus culture, lead in prayer, contribute to chapel and other events, recruit and train student workers, mentor student leaders, and offer support to the Dean of Spiritual Formation on strategic initiatives. They also coordinate important relationships across campus, including with Residence Life and key Faculty partners. Furthermore, the Discipleship Pastor offers confidential pastoral care and spiritual guidance to individual students.
Duties and Responsibilities
Lead
Assist the Campus Pastor in Championing the Christian spiritual formation of the students at IWU through small groups, pastoral care, and spiritually formative programming
Provide strategic guidance on issues related to spiritual formation and personal development of the student body
Represent the Spiritual Formation Office on various committees, panels, and community conversations
Teach
Design and execute programming that facilitates the integration of Christian faith with students' respective academic disciplines
Craft transformative learning experiences for small group leaders through innovative resources, curriculum, and workshops
Shepherd
Demonstrate a commitment to the work of Christian reconciliation
Meet with students regularly for pastoral care and spiritual direction
Facilitate meaningful spaces for reflection and spiritual renewal through prayer, both on campus and on retreats
Collaborate with Faculty and staff across campus to cultivate a culture of small groups in our student housing units, co-curricular programming and academic divisions
Bring direct training and oversight to student chaplains and small group leaders across campus
Supervise 12+ student workers
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: According to Indiana Wesleyan University employment policy all employees must possess a strong Christian commitment and adhere to the standards outlined in the IWU Community Lifestyle Statement.
Education
Bachelor's degree required in Christian ministry, Bible, or Theology
Master's degree required; MDiv or ministry-related field preferred
Pastoral experience and ordination preferred in The Wesleyan Church
Experience
Four or more (4+) years of pastoral experience preferred
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures
