Job Summary

The Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) works with faculty and staff to ensure that students are given an equal opportunity to learn in the classroom. Our mission is to remove barriers for students in pursuit of excellence in education and service.

The DSS Access Coordinator works to support students connected to the DSS office through oversight of the testing center, case management, record maintenance, creating reports, and working with the student registration/renewal process. Most importantly, the DSS team serves as advocates for our students, often acting as a liaison with faculty and staff.

This position works closely with the Director of Disability Support Services. A spirit of collaboration and teamwork is essential in this role. You will be successful in this position if you are passionate about supporting students with different needs, willing to educate with empathy, and comfortable navigating challenging conversations.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provides shared management and mentorship to a Graduate Assistant and student employees acting as Testing Assistants.

Duties/Responsibilities

Office & Team Support:

  • Establish eligibility for services and determine reasonable and effective academic accommodations for students with temporary or permanent disabilities;

  • Coordinate the implementation of accommodations, assistive technology, or auxiliary aids and services, such as but not limited to, classroom or building access, sign language interpreting/speech-to-text services, and temporary parking needs;

  • Assist with the management and maintenance of the DSS database and other data management systems;

  • Maintain the DSS website ensuring accurate sharing of information;

  • Provide support and management for the DSS Graduate Assistant, including hiring and onboarding;

  • Work alongside the Director of DSS to continue growing awareness of student needs through creating systems, educational opportunities, and promoting the work of DSS.

Student Advocacy & Support:

  • Educate students and families on the process for academic accommodations, working closely with the Director of DSS;

  • Cultivate a culture of trust with the DSS office for both students and the DSS team through attention to detail and quickly meeting student needs;

  • Coach students through the accommodation renewal processes;

  • Embrace opportunities to work with students through problem-solving strategies, advocacy, and mediation;

  • Create and maintain campus partnerships to support DSS services and/or students.

Testing Center Management:.

  • Serve as a proctor for Law School exams;

  • Oversee the staffing, scheduling, and organization of the Testing Center;

  • Perform reader duties in the Testing Center as needed: read aloud clearly, at a normal pace, and with good pronunciation verbatim;

  • Communicate with professors to receive all materials/copies of exams needed for testing;

  • Communicate with professors and administrators to resolve problems and provide alternative solutions regarding exams or scheduling;

  • Use campus scheduling software (25Live) to reserve additional spaces for testing as needed;

  • Provide monthly reports about the usage of the Testing Center including but not limited to issues or concerns brought up by students or faculty.

Required Skills/Abilities

Required Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of professional experience working in higher education or an educational institution;

  • Experience supporting individuals with disabilities, preferably college-age students;

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;

  • Ability to identify and resolving issues with precision and effectiveness;

  • Proven track record of delivering exceptional customer service;

  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality;

  • Effective communication skills with the ability to connect effortlessly with individuals from diverse educational, cultural, and social backgrounds;

  • Must adhere to Jacksonville University's Code of Conduct and Academic Integrity Policies.

  • Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and proficient knowledge of typical academic accommodations offered within college or university settings, coupled with a thorough understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act;

  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a higher-education institution, college, or university;

  • Knowledge of assistive and adaptive technology (such as JAWS, CCTV, Glean software, Adobe Pro, etc.);

  • Familiarity with medical/nursing, Speech Pathology, and legal terminology.

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in higher education/student affairs, disability services, counseling services, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in higher education/student affairs, disability services, counseling services, or related field from a regionally accredited college or university.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is primarily indoors but requires the incumbent to be in an outdoor environment when

necessary.

  • Potential need to move (drive) between campuses (main - downtown).

  • Standard office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Occasional early morning,

evening, and weekend hours are required.
