Job Title: Disability Services Coordinator

SUMMARY:

The position works with students on a regular basis to achieve academic success through the policies, programs, and practices set forth by the college and has particular responsibility for working with students with disabilities. This individual is responsible for providing and coordinating services to students with accommodations, for collecting required documentation, and maintaining confidential files regarding the identified students. This person will assist identified students with accommodations in the classroom, registration of classes, physical accommodations on campus and any academic needs related to the student's identified disability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Programming/Students

Disability Services Coordinator

  • Ensures that the college maintains compliance with the ADA, Section 504, and Fair Housing Act in relation to academic, housing, and program-related accommodations for students with disabilities enrolled at GC, including dual enrollment and graduate studies students

  • Serves as the point person for students with qualifying disabilities

  • Works with the identified student and appropriate campus constituents (i.e. Faculty, Housing Office, Registrar, Athletics, etc.) to develop individualized accommodations plans

  • Maintains confidential files regarding student disabilities

  • Provides trainings for faculty, staff, and students regarding the accommodations process

  • Fulfills leadership responsibilities related to the Housing Accommodations Committee and Emotional Support Animal Committee, including:

  • Recruiting appropriate campus constituents from relevant offices to sit on these committees

  • Scheduling regular meetings for both committees

  • Redacting student documentation for confidential review of paperwork

  • Communicating committee decisions to students, including alternatives in cases where specific accommodations are not approved

  • Writes accommodations letters to faculty on behalf of students when academic accommodations are approved

  • Writes accommodations letters to the Housing Office and/or Residence Life on behalf of students when housing-related accommodations or ESAs are approved

  • Consults with the Registrar to ensure classroom accessibility and make changes to academic schedules as necessary

  • Consults with Sodexo and the Student Accounts office when meal plan accommodations are requested

  • Consults with LRC for laptop rental for students with disability-related technology needs

  • Manages contracts for all loaned equipment (i.e. Asher elevator key, audio recorders, LiveScribe pens, etc.)

  • Assigns Bookshare accounts and audiobooks to students with qualifying disabilities

  • Proctors exams related to accommodations needs as necessary

  • Maintains and updates Disability Services policies

  • Maintains and updates information on the GC website and Portal as necessary

  • Manages the budget for Disability Services

  • Pending interest and institutional need this position may also assist with Title IX compliance efforts which includes, but is not limited to, monitoring of College policy in relation to Title IX law; implementation of grievance procedures, including notification, investigation and disposition of complaints; provision of educational materials and training for the campus community; conducting and/or coordinating investigations of complaints received.

Administrative

  • Serve as an ex-officio member on the Admissions committee

  • Collaborate effectively with other offices on campus (i.e. Registrar, Financial Planning, etc.)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Education and / or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) or equivalent from a four-year college; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 18 hours of masters-level coursework is preferred.
  • Communication / Language
  • Requires effective oral and written communication skills; excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to read, analyze and interpret information. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from members of the campus community. Ability to work well with faculty and staff. Ability to effectively present information to groups.
  • Mathematical
  • A working knowledge of statistics and basic mathematical functions is required.
  • Reasoning -- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations -- None required

  • Computer Literacy / General Office Equipment

  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and Internet Explorer. Various office equipment experience (scanner, printer, copier), along with basic troubleshooting experience (jams, replacing paper, etc.)
