Department Summary

The Office of Disability Services seeks to empower students to manage challenges and

limitations imposed by disabilities. Our services aim to provide students with exceptional services as they transition to college or continue their studies. The office serves students with learning, physical, health, or psychiatric disabilities in managing the varying demands of the University experience. In addition to serving students, we assist the University community in making programs, services, and activities accessible for everyone.

The core functions of the Office of Disability Services are put in place accommodations which are deemed appropriate in adherence with Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act and the American with Disabilities Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAA), provision of reasonable accommodations, act as a consultant, and educate the UNT Dallas community.

Position Overview

The Disability Services Coordinator assists the Office of Disability Services in interpreting medical/psychological documentation, determining and providing reasonable accommodations for qualified students with disabilities and creating their Accommodation Letters, thus facilitating equal access to programs, services, and facilities for University of North Texas at Dallas College of Law and Main campuses.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Psychology, Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field and two years of student services, student affairs, counseling, psychology, or social work; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.

  • Knowledge of Texas and federal rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate)

  • Knowledge of disability laws for Higher Education including Section 504 and 508 of the Rehab Act, and Americans with Disabilities Act.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work under pressure; to adjust to constant changes.

  • Ability to maintain complex records; to assemble and organize data of complex nature; and to prepare and submit reports in acceptable formats.

  • Working knowledge of assistive computer technology.

  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office.

  • Strong presentation skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty.

  • Ability to create and implement events

  • Skill in decision-making and leadership

  • Experience with accommodation management software system such as Accommodate

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree with two years of experience working with persons with disabilities in a

educational setting; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Job Duties:

  • Works with the Director of Disabilities to manage a caseload of students requiring services through the Office of Disability Services.

  • Conducts initial interview and reviews medical/psychological information to determine eligibility and to determine the student's accommodation/accessibility needs

  • Work with the Director of Disability Services to coordinate the implementation of accommodations for students with disabilities according to disability laws (note taking, CART (Communication Access Real-time Translation), sign language interpreting, exam accommodations and other course accommodations.

  • On a case-by-case basis, the coordinator will determine appropriate accommodations for student by consultation with student, third party vendors and other staff.

  • Schedule and Proctor exams for those students requiring testing through the Disability Services Office.

  • Collaborate with other offices in Student Affairs as well as other departments to support students, staff, faculty and the community members with disabilities.

  • Develop and Provide Disability Awareness training.

  • Advocate for students with disabilities.

  • Assists with official office communications with all students, faculty and staff.

  • Work with the Director of Disability Services to develop and revise policies and procedures for the Disability Services Office.

Monday- Friday (8:00 am

  • 5:00 pm), some evenings and weekends according to programming
