Provides services and accommodations to students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, arranges for accommodations including interpreters, real time captionists, note takers, equipment specifically used by students who are hard of hearing and coordinates these services with the student and their instructors, develops an orientation program for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing who are interested in attending the University. Supervises qualified interpreters and real time Captionists including arranging interpreter schedules to meet the accommodation needs of students. Conducts workshops to assist interpreters to improve skills, collaborates with community agencies serving people who are deaf or hard of hearing, conducts campus workshops that increase awareness about this population. Provides interpreting services as needed in the CDA office for prospective students and campus requests, completes assignments in the event of staff cancelations or sickness. Assists with general office duties including answering phones, assisting with exam proctoring especially during peak times of semester midterms and finals.

Responsibilities

  • Act as liaison between the student, instructor and interpreters to guarantee the student's accommodations are appropriately implemented.

  • Interview, hire, train, interpreters and determine salary based on Certification. Assign interpreters or real time captionists (RTC) to work with individual students. Coordinate this service with the Associate Director. In collaboration with Associate Director determine when interpreters/RTC's will be provided for requests other than in the classroom.

  • Maintain accurate records and work with the Associate Director to maintain a list of hourly staff hired, salary rate, and hours of service for budgetary reasons.

  • Evaluate interpreters/RTC's skills and their effectiveness by obtaining student feedback at the conclusion of each semester.

  • Ensure compliance of CDA policies and procedures, various state and federal laws.

  • Maintain an interpreter for student needs.

  • Maintain an inventory of equipment used by students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing, check out equipment when requested and ensure it is returned at the end of each semester. Keep a report of the use of this equipment to be submitted to the Associate Director at the end of each semester.

  • Work with State Division of Rehabilitation Services counselors to determine what services they will provide their clients attending the University. Coordinate this with the Associate Director.

  • Coordinate request for interpreters from other University departments, fees and work with the Administrative Assistant regarding invoices.

  • Provide office support including front office, phones, and exam proctoring.

  • Ability to follow directions, carryout assigned responsibilities in a dependable and professional manner, demonstrate good communication skills, respect and maintain confidentiality about services provided, demonstrate commitment to excellent service.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in psychology, special education, social work, counseling, or rehabilitation counseling or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); the ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students; and writing and organizational skills required. Three years experience working with college students, preferably students with disabilities required.

Preferences

Master's Degree in a related field preferred; the ability to do program planning; and a working knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) preferred.
