Position Summary

Reporting to the Vice President for Public Safety, the Director is responsible for all aspects of administration of the day-to-day operations at the Columbia University Morningside campus. He/she will lead a senior team of professionals consisting of a Captain of Patrol, 3 Lieutenants, 25 Sergeants, 84 unionized uniformed security officers, and approximately 200 uniformed contract security guards assigned to various locations on and around the campus.

The Director provides planning, programming, operations, delivery of services, advice and counsel in all areas related to Public Safety. He/she directs the planning, infrastructure, quality improvement, marketing and productivity of all Public Safety operational personnel. He/she provides personnel with a clear operational understanding of working in a Public Safety environment in a higher education culture.

The Director is responsible for meeting with administrators throughout the campus, including Academic and Administrative Staff and Faculty, and CU Facilities personnel to develop, update and provide oversight and implementation of daily security needs and special long term needs due to unusual events or construction. Work closely with other department heads to plan for short term needs for special events including visits by high profile lecturers and visiting dignitaries . Serves as liaison with Federal, State, and Local Law Enforcement agencies to coordinate plans and coverage for special events on campus and to address normal operating needs.

The Director serves as a key member on various University Committees. He/she has oversight in administering the TWU Collective Bargaining Agreement for Security Officers, including monitoring attendance and overtime and making recommendations to the Vice President regarding staffing assignments for officers and supervisors. He or she conducts investigations into reports of misconduct by security personnel, including complaints regarding service, and administers appropriate response including discipline. Participates in the process of hiring, evaluating, and training security personnel, and makes recommendations for promotion. Conducts information sessions on security awareness. Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required.

  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience within a security, public safety, or law enforcement organization are required.

  • Experience working in higher education security/public safety is strongly desired.

  • The ideal candidate will also have supervisory experience in a unionized environment; an ability to articulate a comprehensive knowledge of the issues, trends, and best practices in campus safety and security; demonstrated skill in developing and sustaining collaborative and culturally inclusive relationships; an ability to develop and implement organizational vision, strategy, and goals with and for students, staff, and key stakeholders; and expert skills in interpersonal communication and relationship building.

  • The ability to perform in a high pressured, fast-paced environment, with proven skills in a variety of competencies including strategic planning, organizational analysis, and process development is highly desirable.

  • The Director must also possess the ability to work effectively, tactfully, and equitably with a broad constituency of students, faculty, and staff in a University setting and work with changing priorities, manage myriad programs and events simultaneously and independently, exercise initiative and use discretion. Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. PeopleSoft, and Kronos experience is a plus.

  • The Director must be able to engage in strenuous physical activity, including walking, climbing stairs, carrying equipment and supplies, including boxes, and packages over 25 pounds, as well as standing or sitting for long periods of time.

  • The Director must also be willing and able to perform duty in inclement weather conditions.

  • Since the Department of Public Safety is a 24 hour, 7 day a week operation, the Director must also be willing and able to perform duty on weekends, late evenings and early mornings as directed.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An advanced degree is preferred but not required.
