Do Great Things! Durham Technical Community College is hiring a Director/Instructor, in the Public Safety Service Programs. The Director/Instructor, Public Safety Training is a 12-month, full-time staff position within the Department of Human Services and Public Safety. Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Dean of Public Safety Services.

  • The development, delivery, and management of specialized and state mandated training for public safety personnel within Durham and Orange counties.

  • Acts as a mentor, coordinator, and facilitator for the Public Safety faculty while carrying out the vision, mission, and goals of the College.

  • Maintains a climate of open communication, collegiality, and teamwork that is equitable in the Public Safety programs, and actively supports the growth and development of both the curriculum and continuing education programs.

  • Ensures the availability of quality learning opportunities for students and is the first line of support for student complaints and grievances.

  • Responsible for teaching 6 credit hours and/or 96 contact hours, curriculum development, faculty assignments, course scheduling, program review, developing student learning outcomes/assessments, student advising, and scheduling, professional development, institutional committee service, community service, and community relations.

  • Supervisor and administrator over the full-time and adjunct faculty in the Public Safety pathways. Including the development of contracts, service agreements, and completion of monthly payroll.

  • Assist the 911 Training Coordinator and supervise the delivery and compliance of Commission-approved programs.

  • Assist the CPR Training Coordinator and supervise the delivery and compliance of AHA-approved programs

  • Contracts and administers specialized criminal justice, fire, rescue, and emergency management continuing education training to meet the needs of local and state departments.

  • Serves as a liaison for students and Public Safety agencies within the service area with the College.

  • Responsible for the oversight and compliance of North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshall Commission-based programs and file compliance.

  • Prepare an annual master schedule of course offerings that meet the needs of the program, students, and area fire & rescue, emergency management, and 911 agencies, ensuring that the instructional resources of the institution are being utilized efficiently and effectively and that its mission is being met.

  • Prepare and administer the program budgets, regularly monitor the status of expenditures, maintain necessary records, and file reports.

  • Assume other appropriate responsibilities and perform additional tasks assigned by the Dean or Chief Academic Officer in meeting the institution's needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

N.C. State Fire Marshall's Office, N.C. State Office of Emergency Medical Services or N.C. Criminal Justice Training & Standards Division qualified instructor certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with 18+ graduate hours in a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.

Preferred Work Experience:

One-year post-secondary teaching experience

Four years of experience as a public safety professional preferably in a Fire Department, or with an Emergency Management, Emergency Medical Service, or 911 Agency.

  • Experience with program review and student learning outcomes assessment

  • Experience designing, developing, implementing, teaching, and evaluating seated, Web-enhanced, and online classes

  • Familiarity with online course management systems (CMS), such as Canvas

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise program faculty in a diverse and collegial environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize current instructional technology

  • Demonstrated understanding of the educational needs of the Durham Technical Community College service area.

  • Ability to establish, maintain, and promote effective communication and interpersonal relations across departmental lines, with associates, the public safety community, the higher education community, and the public.

Normal Working Hours:

At least a 40-hour work week as determined by the supervisor to allow the employee to fulfill the duties, including occasional evening and weekend hours. Summer schedules may vary to enable four-day or four-and-one-half-day work weeks.
