What you will be doing

The Director of Winning Model Support will report to the Center Store Group Vice President (and up through the Senior Vice President of Merchandising) This person will be responsible for important process development activities in accordance with broader department strategy that they will also help to shape.

Working closely with each National Category Director, the Director of Winning Model Support will lead a large team responsible for developing Strategy, Assortment, Schematics and Implementation processes for all center store categories.

This is a new role and a significant opportunity to make a difference in retail transformation at scale. As the leader of the Winning Model Support team, you will work closely with national and division Category leads and merchandising leadership. You will develop deep Assortment and Schematic knowledge.

The position will be based in Boise, Idaho, or one of our main regional offices (Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Pleasanton CA, Denver CO, Dallas TX, Chicago, IL, or Fullerton, CA, Phoenix, AZ). Some travel will be required to interact with Category and Division merchandising teams.

Main responsibilities

  • Financial reporting
  • Responsible for maintaining reporting activities on standard and ad hoc projects, including progress towards milestones throughout the Winning Model process, new item performance tracking and Operational efficiency metrics. Works closely with Corporate and Division Merchandising leads to stay current with obstacles and communication. Tasked with building and maintaining new item introduction programs for total center store for 2024. Must build this program from scratch using best practices gleaned from each division. Needs to understand baseline incrementality and concurrent constraints to enable best execution. Must build a repeatable process with clear tracking and aligned performance metrics. Develops and manages New Item success programs and works closely with Director of Financial services to report against KPI's
  • Category Contract Approval
  • Reviews detailed contract submission, by category, and determines initial rejection or approval, based on potential revenue opportunity vs steps required. Subsequently, this person will be responsible for working the contract through additional cross functional teams, including Legal, Accounting and ultimately 3rd party, Deloitte and Touche approvals. Over 400 suppliers are under contract for Center store.
  • Assortment and Schematic processes. This role requires expertise in all steps of the Assortment and Schematics processed for total Center Store. Must continually assess and refine model steps (over 80 steps, covering 52 weeks) to enable versatility and productivity around innovation and operational efficiency metrics.

  • Collaboration. Leads a team of Analysts, working closely with Corporate and Division category teams and the Director of Financial Services team. Understands National and division performance opportunities by category and works with multiple internal cross-functional teams to connect business opportunities and develop both strategic and tactical solutions to the planning processes. Co develops National programs with the Shopper Marketing team and the Collective (Stock up sale, etc) Four events are planned for 2024. Identifies highest impact suppliers to participate, best items based on historical performance, coordinates division participation and group negotiation and gains alignment of key principles with all stakeholders.

Applies knowledge of leadership competency frameworks and a variety of proven practices, tools, and techniques that help leaders develop in their jobs. Leads a large team responsible for all center store categories (30 desks, over 100 categories). This includes both the Grocery and GM structures for Assortment and Schematics

The salary range is $135,800 to $190,100 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay (accrued based on hours worked), PTO/Vacation Pay (accrued based on hours worked) or Flexible Time Of, paid holidays (9days annually), bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401K eligibility). Associates in this position are also eligible for a quarterly bonus.

What we are searching for

  • Field or relevant business experience where a solid understanding of category management, including assortment and schematics principles, and marketing, merchandising have been gained

  • Excellent understanding of merchandising methodologies and practices, and P&L and financial management

  • Strong quantitative, marketing, merchandising, and consumer research background to read, interpret, and understand how internal and external factors influence financial results

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and experience in taking initiative and making decisive yet appropriate decisions

  • Strong planning, facilitating, and organizing skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective relationships within and outside the company

  • Strategy development skills

  • Proven track record of being a strong negotiator

  • Skilled in Category Business Planning

  • Able to effectively lead a collaborative process with multiple stakeholders

We believe the successful candidate has these qualifications and experience:

  • Proficiency with merchandising tools (e.g., Periscope, Demand Tech, I2E, BI Dashboards, OMNI, Circana, Nielsen, Mintel)

  • 3+ years of category management experience. 5+ years' experience in the grocery industry.

  • 5+ years' experience managing people.

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience with a related degree in Business, Marketing, or related field.

  • Up to 30% travel depending on location
