Employment Status: Full-time, regular "exempt" position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am 5:00 pm, occasional evening and weekend hours.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Position Summary:

California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) is very pleased to invite applications for a creative, collaborative and strategic leader to serve as the Director of the Veterans Success Center (VSC). The VSC ranks highly (1st in California, 8th nationally among four-year colleges by Military Times, "Best for Vets: Colleges: 2015") in educating and serving student veterans.

The Director fosters a culture of trust and connectedness across the university community that promotes well-being and success for student veterans.

To learn and implement best practices and enhance understanding of the specific needs of student veterans, the Director develops long lasting partnerships with veteran serving organizations and post-secondary institutions to garner community resources. The Director builds an environment that promotes understanding and nurtures the value of military service and the celebration of human difference.

The Director strives to secure additional resources to enhance services to student veterans and coordinate military events. The Director partners with the Career Center, Counseling & Psychological Services and other departments to assist student veterans with a variety of issues.

Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Services, the Director of the VSC provides vision, direction, program development and daily administration of the VSC on the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses, including the Living Veterans Memorial Garden. The Director is responsible for assessing prospective and continuing student veterans needs and developing programs to ensure access and promote success; evaluating transition services effectiveness; developing policies and procedures; ensuring all projects meet deadlines and clearly articulates outcomes; working closely with other departments on special events, coordinating student leadership opportunities and student veterans orientations.

The Director will manage complex student issues, including but not limited to, transitioning from the military to higher education, selecting courses, understanding campus requirements, personal development and academic skills building, university withdrawal and appeals, providing short-term military leave support and tracking, and exploring career options and preparing for life after CSUSB. The Director develops partnerships with national organizations, community colleges, local service bases and community-based organizations with the intention of meeting local veterans' educational needs, establishes best practices and increasing the veteran population at CSUSB; represents veterans on campus-wide and local communities and boards; develops grants and other fundraising opportunities. The Director provides leadership to the VSC's Advisory Committee and addresses issues brought forward; collaborates with regional and other collaboratives and campus military affiliated clubs and organizations; serves as a member of the Student Success Initiative Committee and other campus and community committees and boards.

The Director is responsible for marketing and promotion, including but not limited to, defining target market, completing program assessments, researching student veterans needs, and developing and implementing campaigns to disseminate program information. The Director prepare and delivers reports in both oral and written formats, maintains a master calendar of all programs, and prepares and monitors department budget. Key areas of oversight include, but are not limited to:

Manage the fiscal, programmatic, risk management and personnel resources.

Ensure compliance with Federal, State, CSU, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and local laws, regulations and practices.

Promote the academic development and success of student veterans, active duty, reservists, National Guard members, ROTC cadets and dependents attending CSUSB.

Provide campus/community programs and promote a campus climate that values veterans.

The Director will complete other duties as assigned.


ducation and Experience

Requirements:

Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, business, counseling or a related field from a regionally accredited university;

Three (3) or more years of experience of progressively responsible leadership experience, including supervisory/managerial experience, the design/development and direction of veterans-related programs and services preferably in a higher education setting;

Strong history of program development, supervision and evaluation and budgeting;

Strategic planning/visioning aptitude and the ability to enhance and develop new initiatives independently;

Possess excellent professional relationship building/networking skills, demonstrate excellent communication (oral and written) skills and possess strong leadership skills;

Track record of ability to meet goals, hold staff accountable and promote engagement at all levels to achieve optimal performance;

Excellent organization and problem resolution skills;

Ability to work effectively under pressure, ambiguity and conflicting goals;

Ability to interpret and communicate policies and procedures;

Ability to work effectively as a team member and establish and maintain excellent cooperative working relationships with on- and off-campus stakeholders;

Demonstrate sensitivity and a strong commitment to working with a diverse student population and teams;

Demonstrate creativity, excellent judgment, professionalism and dedication and practice of sound student development principles.
