Department of Emergency Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for Director.

Emergency Medicine is the home of the University of Washington (UW) Michael K. Copass, MD Paramedic Training Program Paramedic Training Program. Specifically, the objective of the Paramedic Training Program is to educate and train paramedic students to attain advanced knowledge, experience, and skills to evaluate and effectively treat medical emergencies in the pre-hospital setting as mobile intensive care paramedics. Secondarily, it is the role of the Training Program to supervise and manage all currently certified King County paramedics as the single EMS Provider Supervisory Organization. This training program provides the initial and ongoing training for all King County Medic One paramedics. This training is done through clinical rotations, medic unit internship and classroom lectures. Classroom didactic is presented by physicians using state of the art AV technology. The Paramedic Training Program is also closely tied to the Seattle Fire Department Medic One Program which allows students to gain additional training sessions, drills and practical field experience.

The Director for the University of Washington Paramedic Training Program is responsible for strategic planning, directing, and controlling of Paramedic Training Program. The Director is also responsible for maintaining key relationships between University leadership, Seattle Fire Department leadership, King County, and the Medic One Foundation Board of Directors. The Director is expected to exercise independent judgment, solve complex problems, and develop innovative approaches in training paramedic students. This position requires an ability to direct and manage multiple priorities, effectively analyze a range of educational situations, and make sound decisions using effective time management skills, good business acumen, and balanced administrative judgment. The Director must be able to work independently and collaboratively with multiple critical stakeholders to achieve the goals of the Paramedic Program and School of Medicine.

The Paramedic Program involves a dynamic environment. The Program is hosted at Harborview Medical Center and by the Seattle Fire Department. The Program has educational sites at HMC, UWMC, OHMC, ALNW, Seattle Children's, Bellevue Children's, KC Medical Examiner's Office, Kidney Center, Bainbridge Island FD, and all 5 Seattle/King County Paramedic Agencies, including Seattle FD, Shoreline FD, Redmond FD, Bellevue FD, and King County Medic One. The Director will coordinate and oversee the program's involvement with each of these educational sites and organizations. The Director must be committed to the goals and missions of the School of Medicine and the University. The Paramedic Training Program has a long history as an important community service for the Northwest. The Program has a national reputation specifically for the state-of-the-art curriculum and training provided by its faculty and staff.

The Director will be responsible for all aspects of the program, including, but not limited to, program management, including oversight of the budget in partnership with key programmatic leaders and the Medic One Foundation Board of Directors, strategic planning, program development, community relations, and quality improvement initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management of Program Operations (50%)

  • Budgetary oversight of the Paramedic Training Program including, fiscal responsibility for gifts, grants, and government contracts.

  • Oversight of program administration, organization, and supervision of the educational program.

  • Lead quality improvement initiatives to support the improvement of the educational program, including systems that demonstrate program effectiveness.

  • Lead strategic planning of the program to ensure a well-supported program that achieves regional and national requirements for well-trained paramedics.

  • Orientation of and collaboration with clinical and field internship organizations and preceptors.

  • Responsible for constructive analysis and resolution of concerns and issues that may arise with program stakeholders; responsible for communicating concerns to key stakeholders.

  • Supervision of Assistant Director of Program Operations and indirect responsibility for administrative staff within the Paramedic Training Program organizational chart. Program Director and Program administrative staff.

  • Lead oversight of coordination of paramedic student progress and promotions in collaboration with leadership from the sponsoring paramedic agency, Department of Emergency Medicine, Seattle Fire Department, and the Washington State Department of Health.

  • Ensure existing and proposed program policies and procedures are implemented appropriately and are consistent with UW policy and practice.

Development & Community Relations (30%)

  • Work directly with key program stakeholders to promote and assure constructive relationships with organizations associated with the Paramedic Training Program.

  • Work with Medic One Foundation leadership to define, present, and advance the mission of Paramedic Training to potential donors and the general public.

  • Regularly attend, participate in, and present at the standing Medic One Board of Directors meetings.

  • Collaborate with community stakeholders, including the development and management of communications and outreach programs.

  • Participate in fundraising and other supporting initiatives to benefit the Program mission.

  • Oversee fiscal management of gifts, grants, and contracts.

  • Represent Paramedic Training on WA State committees and councils such as the Central Region EMS & Trauma Council, EMS Education & Certification Program Director Work Group, Prehospital Technical Advisor Committee. (I can name some more but want to speak to how his position represents King County, the region, and State, it may be unnecessary but wanted to reflect this positions work)

  • Other duties as assigned

Programmatic Educational Support (20%)

  • Serve as the direct or indirect supervisor of program educators; direct supervisor of the program's Continuing Education Specialist.

  • Review and approve the annual program curriculum and proposed curriculum changes.

  • Engage and meet with the paramedic students regularly to assess individual educational progress.

  • Oversee the creation and management of student improvement plans.

  • Participate in direct classroom teaching as needed.

  • Lead field training exercises as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors in Business, Health Sciences, or related field. (a Bachelor's degree is required by CoAEMSP, Master's is preferred)
  • A minimum of ten years of related work experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicable medical or allied health education, training, and experience.

  • Knowledge of methods of instruction, testing and evaluation of students; have field experience in the delivery of out-of-hospital emergency care.

  • Academic training and preparation related to emergency medical services at least equivalent to that of a paramedic.

  • Knowledge of the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice and National EMS Education Standards, as well as about evidenced-informed clinical practice.

  • Fire service-based EMS experience, or EMS experience, or both.

  • Public speaking skills.

DESIRED:

  • Current certification as Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic by the State of Washington.

  • Experience with Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and Joint Review Committee on Education (JRC) accreditation compliance.

  • Curriculum development experience, reflecting a diverse student base.

  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor certification.

  • Experience in teaching the current National Paramedic curriculum.

  • Student counseling skills.
