Working Title Director, Tutoring and Academic Support Brief Summary of Job Description

As part of the Loper Success Hub, the Director of Tutoring and Academic Support oversees academic support services that ensure the success, retention, and completion of students at UNK. With support from staff and other collaborators, the Director provides oversight and ensures effectiveness of Tutoring Services which includes subject tutoring, the Writing Center, Success Coaching, the foundations class curriculum and instruction, and early start programs (Trailblazers Academy). The Director collaborates with other offices in the Loper Success Hub, faculty and staff to track emerging trends in learning assistance programs, retention, and in higher education to adapt or create new services and initiatives to support, retain, and graduate UNK students.

The Director oversees strategic planning for the department and ensures alignment with Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and the university's mission and vision, identifying and using data to inform decisions. The position supervises 2 to 3 professional staff and assists with recruiting, training, and overseeing 40-50 student workers. The Director of the Tutoring and Academic Support reports to the Sr.

Director for the Loper Success Hub on advancing student success goals and works closely with the Dean of the Library to support the goals for UNK libraries. The Director implements and leads practices that advance UNK's commitment to inclusive excellence that increases students' belonging, access and success.

Job Duties

  • Oversee and coordinate all operations of Tutoring and Academic Support; manage the budget; ensure effectiveness of student services and instruction; identify and meet academic support needs for students; promote services to students, faculty, parents, and other stakeholders. Maintain College Reading and Learning Association Certification.

    Represent the department to various audiences; partner with Library and other key faculty and staff to meet evolving needs of students and university community. Ensure reporting department's efforts align with division and administration's strategic priorities. Collaborate closely with faculty and staff partners to achieve strategic goals.

  • Provide direct supervision of the Assistant Director of the Tutoring and Foundation Programs and the Student Success Coordinators. Assists with welcome desk operations at Tutoring Services.

  • Oversee administration of all foundational courses and serve as instructor as needed. Supervise staff responsible for foundational courses.

    Identify, train, and support faculty teaching up to 15 or more sections of Foundations for Learning. Evaluate and develop curriculum for foundational classes.

  • Perform assessment to ensure curriculum and service effectiveness and satisfaction. Identify research and best practices to explore new services, initiatives, and strategies for supporting students' academic growth and retention. Collect and interpret student data to inform decision-making and set strategic priorities.

  • Provide direct oversight of the Writing Center including maintaining certifications, identifying best practices, and training for student staff. Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supporting, and evaluating student workers who staff the Loper Success Hub and provide tutoring. Support Assistant Director of Tutoring and Academic Support in supervision of Subject Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Language Support, and other support services.

Required Qualifications

Master's Degree in English, Writing, Higher Education, or relevant field. Experience in a higher education setting.

Experience managing staff and department functions. Excellent oral and written communication skills, experience supporting diverse and at-promise student populations, and mastery of office communication and database management. Demonstrated ability to work in and/or lead a team environment with a common mission.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years of experience in higher education student affairs or related discipline. Experience in learning-supportive environment in higher education.

Experience managing staff and department functions in a higher education environment. Experience supporting diverse and at-promise student populations. Mastery of office communication and database management
