UPMC Altoona seeks a full-time Director of Trauma Services to manage and direct the development, staffing, budgeting, and operations of the UPMC Altoona Trauma & Emergency General Surgery Service.
As Director, you will address all administrative and patient care issues of the Service and assure that the Service maintains compliance with hospital policy and procedures, JCAHO, PTSF (PA Trauma Systems Foundation), and other regulatory agencies. You will also be actively involved in community organizations and hospital committees related to these responsibilities, including the UPMC trauma service line. You will work closely with a team of trauma surgeons, physician assistants, and center staff.
Our Trauma Services see approximately 1,800 trauma activations annually, and serves as a geographic center providing trauma services to central Pennsylvania.
A highly visible role reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, you will promote and maintain cooperation within the department, hospital and community, along with the overall operation and administrative functioning of the UPMC Altoona Trauma/Emergency General Surgery service.

Collaborates with the Trauma Medical Director and Trauma Program Administrator to develop and maintain a set of quality indicators for the trauma program.Oversees all performance improvement documentation including but not limited to patient performance files, mortality and morbidity, and all practice guidelines.Integrates trauma quality improvement with the hospital quality program.Reviews PTSF quarterly reports and indicates trends for review.Maintains credentialing data on all trauma practitioners.Performs concurrent medical record monitoring and data collection.Ensures that all components of the trauma program meet the quality assurance standards as established by the hospital.Investigates and reviews patient incidents and unexpected events directly or delegates this responsibility to appropriate staff members. Consults with Surgical and Medical Director on medical quality care issues.Supervises and maintains Trauma Registry data.
Coordinates activities with the Trauma Program Medical Director and Trauma Program Administrator to facilitate overall quality and consistency.Responsible for strategic planning activities for the trauma program including clinical, educational, and research activities.Assesses, implements, and evaluates department programs and services to support the trauma programs strategic and operational plans.Ensures compliance with standards set by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF).Provides leadership and manages resources to articulate and integrate the organizational vision for trauma program continual growth and development.Coordinates and mentors other nurses in the program regarding patient care, process improvement, and PTSF requirements.
Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healthy relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.Oversees the data flow process for concurrent quality issues and directs each to appropriate personnel.Oversees and coordinates organizational preparation of the PTSF survey and application process.Participates in scholarly activities including writing for publication, abstracts, or poster presentations at conferences.Manages staff, fiscal, and physical resources. Develops and controls departmental expenses.Interviews, hires, orients, coaches, trains, schedules, evaluates, and disciplines staff.

Participates in the development of nursing policies related to the care of the trauma patient.Develops, recommends, and administers policies to provide direction and oversight necessary to insure an efficient and effective patient care and/or services.Establishes and maintains effective work relationship with members of the health care team in order to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of optimal trauma patient care.Coordinates the complex network of the many disciplines that work in concert to provide high quality care, serving as a resource to all those involved in trauma care.Serves as a member of related in-hospital, regional, state, and national trauma related committees upon request.
Graduate of an approved school of nursing for registered nurses.
Masters degree in Nursing or related health care field required, either at time of hire/transfer, or must be enrolled in a program within one year of hire/transfer date and completed within three years of enrollment. (i.e. public health, informational technology, administration, etc.)
Two years management experience in emergency or critical care nursing required.
Five years nursing experience in a trauma accredited facility required.
Five years experience in clinical nursing care, preferably in trauma required.
Must possess a strong knowledge of PTSF Standards for Trauma Center Accreditation.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
ACLS, PALS, CEN and/or ATCN required
Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
Act 73 FBI Clearance
