Full Time Description/Notes: Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage maintenance, transportation, and custodial operations. Maintain physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use may be made at all times. Provide students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, and functional.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Building Maintenance and Repair

Direct and manage custodial, maintenance and repair, security, and central warehouse operations of district.

Receive and process work orders for repair and maintenance of buildings and grounds.

Develop and maintain written departmental procedures for maintenance, repair, operations, and security of all district buildings and equipment.

Prepare plans and specifications for contracted repair work and site improvement for submission to purchasing department for bids.

Transportation and Vehicle Maintenance Operations

Manage the delivery of transportation services for students and ensure that they are picked up and arrive safely and on time.

Oversee preparation and updating of bus routes and schedules for all schools in district and develop plans to meet future transportation needs.

Communicate changes in routes and scheduling to campuses and the public when warranted.

Coordinate transportation for extracurricular activities and special programs.

Assign bus drivers to routes and extracurricular trips and find substitutes as needed.

Oversee repair of all district-owned vehicles and preventive maintenance. Ensure that vehicle repair requests and work orders are prioritized and processed in a timely manner. Contract for outside services that cannot be performed in shop.

Monitor fuel deliveries and distribution.

Policy, Reports, and Law

Implement federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in maintenance and transportation area.

Compile, maintain, file, and present all reports, records, and other documents required. Prepare, process, and maintain all documents required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug testing of bus drivers.

Ensure that employee time records are accurately maintained and data necessary to process transportation, maintenance and custodial payroll is delivered in a timely manner.

Budget and Inventory

Administer maintenance budget and ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed prudently.

Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.

Plan and direct inventory and stock control program for equipment and supplies.

Initiate purchase orders and bids in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.

Replace and maintain a current inventory of supplies and parts to avoid delay when reordering.

Approve and forward invoices and purchase orders for maintenance, transportation and custodial departments to accounting department.

Recommend disposal of obsolete equipment and purchase replacement equipment when necessary.

Personnel Management

Assign work to maintenance, transportation and custodial personnel and oversee completion.

Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in maintenance, transportation and custodial departments.

Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.

Recruit, train, and supervise maintenance, transportation and custodial personnel and make sound recommendations about personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.


Maintain safety standards in conformance with federal, state, and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.

Ensure that equipment is maintained in operating and optimum condition.

Assess road conditions and hazards and advise administration about inclement weather conditions that may result in delayed starts or the closing of schools.

Investigate school bus accidents and student safety violations.

Maintain safety standards in conformance with federal, state, and insurance regulations.

Organize and conduct training programs to promote a safe work environment.


Respond to after hours emergencies as needed, to include fire alarms.

Participate in development of the district's disaster plan and be prepared to take an active role in responding to emergencies as needed.

Attend and make presentations at conferences and school board meetings regarding transportation, custodial and maintenance issues and innovations.

Operate school vehicles as needed.

Other duties as assigned.




Bachelor's degree

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic principles of construction, school plant maintenance, and custodial operations

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to coordinate district function

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Ability to interpret data

Ability to read blueprints and schematics

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to direct and manage operations of a large fleet of vehicles

Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam

Knowledge of energy management and vehicle repair and maintenance

Ability to conduct on-site inspections of all vehicle repair and maintenance operations

Ability to use technology to plan, operate, monitor, and evaluate transportation operations

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills


Three years supervisory experience in maintenance, transportation and/or custodial operations

Five years experience in maintenance, transportation and/or custodial operations
