Position Objective and Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for the overall leadership of technical operations / manufacturing sciences activities for Clinical and Next-Generation Sequencing Division's (CSD's) products and sites. The incumbent in this role plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and/or development strategies within the operations function and liaises with Research and Development (R&D) and Product Management on strategies for new product introduction. They will lead a team of engineers / scientists which proves and applies scientific theories to develop new and/or improved products, processes or technologies, and provides technical insight and knowledge to facilitate and lead changes. This role is also involved with a variety of productivity projects benefiting the business and operations.

This incumbent is responsible for developing operating plans and budgets that include headcount, capital planning, and expense for support activities. In addition, this position is responsible for managing a workforce consisting of professional salaried employees. Employee development and welfare are also a key component to the management function.

  • Works closely with R&D and Manufacturing to ensure that we develop our products with robust manufacturability.

  • Responsible for the successful transfer of products into the manufacturing environment, as well as to support manufacturing site transfer activities across the Division. Programs are composed of a portfolio of projects focused on reagents, instruments, chips, and plastics.

  • Partners with key business and Manufacturing Operations to manage deliverables for New Product Introductions and externally driven projects.

  • Leads and develops a team of engineers and scientists.

  • Leads via influence an extended team to plan and coordinate numerous smaller projects in the Manufacturing Operations area involving test methodology, design of experiment (DoE), and other technical trouble shooting efforts.

  • Organize technical reviews and provide project status updates to the Operations and Division leadership.

  • Coordinate the efforts of technical teams in the fields of software, mechanical design, plastics, fluidics, automation, PCB, FPGA, GPU, power supplies, semiconductor, packaging, molecular biology reagents, chemicals.

  • Support, sponsor, and participate in PPI (Practical Process Improvement) initiatives with a focus on continuous improvement.

  • As related to NPI projects, ensure required compliance levels with regulatory agencies are met: ISO13485, cGMP, 21CFR820 regulations, safety, emissions and shipping.

  • Lead "Tiger" teams toward issue resolution. Assign resources working with Product Managers, FAS, FSE, R&D, QA, and QC to ensure issue containment, root cause identification and mitigation. Review trends with QA to drive continuous improvement.

  • May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.

Minimum Qualification

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline and/or equivalent experience. Master's Degree preferred.

  • Requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in the management of multidisciplinary teams in a high tech environment involving biological instruments and reagents, chemistry and/or bioinformatics.

  • Working knowledge of the PCP (Product Commercialization Process) roadmap.

  • Experienced with quality systems which are compliant with ISO 13485 and cGMP.

  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing and logistic organizations desired.

  • Strong knowledge of project management tools.

  • Demonstrates strong business and financial acumen, including understanding of company's financial statements and the impact to the financials for NPI projects.

  • Practical application experience in continuous improvement methodologies and/or lean 6-sigma to improve processes, strengthen quality and drive efficiency.

  • Customer-centric with the ability to build and drive strategic customer relationships, both internally and externally, national and internationally.

  • Experience & demonstrated executive-level reporting and presentations.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Analytical and detail-oriented with strong Excel & PowerPoint skills.

  • Solutions-oriented with a forward focused mentality; sees problems before they arrive and develops strategic solutions.

  • Must be a creative problem solver and have the ability to function in a rapidly changing environment.

  • Ability to influence others and partner cross functionally.

  • Experience with next-generation sequencing methods and data.

  • Strong customer/quality orientation with demonstrated ability to effectively build and manage customer and partner relationships at a senior level.
