Job Summary

This position will lead the strategic planning function for Engineering and will report directly to the VP of Engineering.

The key responsibility for the role includes formulating and implementing the overall strategy for Engineering as well as periodically refreshing the strategy. A key aspect of the role will be to ensure alignment between Engineering strategy and the Operations Strategic Framework (READ). Other associated responsibilities include developing and tracking the annual goals and objectives for Engineering and developing the overall masterplan for the function.

This position also supervises the Chief of Staff for the VP of Engineering. The chief of staff responsibilities include headcount and budget planning and tracking, productivity savings tracking, management of key meetings and facilitation of workshops.

Working closely with the Operations site heads, this position is responsible for the overall master planning process. A key focus will be to ensure alignment across the individual site master plans including assumptions, planning criteria and frequency of updates.

Working closing with the Engineering Leadership Team, this position is also responsible for developing the overall approach to Safety for Engineering with a strong focus on contractor Safety. Defining and tracking safety metrics will be a key deliverable.

Working closely with the Engineering Leadership Team, this position is also responsible for developing the overall compliance approach and strategy for the function. Key aspects of compliance include facilities and associated processes being inspection ready, planning and approach for non-conformances and training compliance. Engineering is the owner of several Quality processes including drawing management and pest control. Defining and tracking compliance metrics will be a key deliverable.

Another key responsibility includes developing overall training plan for the various areas within Engineering as well as tracking training compliance. Defining and tracking training metrics will be a key deliverable.

This position also manages the various insurance programs that Amgen participates in, including the FM Global program.

This position will manage a team of five to seven staff.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctorate degree and 4 years of Engineering experience

OR

Master's degree and 8 years of Engineering experience

OR

Bachelor's degree and 10 years of Engineering experience

AND
4 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, and programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree in Engineering, Science

  • 15+ years' experience in Engineering to include broad operations experience, roles in manufacturing, process development, maintenance, utility operations, instrumentation and/or systems engineering

  • 7+ years' management experience in a lead role of in an engineering function

  • 2+ years' experience managing a large, multi-layered organization or matrixed organization

  • Ability to think strategically

  • Strong leadership, sound judgment and decision-making skills, proven team development, strong communication skills, and proactive in leading and driving process improvement across large cross functional teams and presenting to senior management

  • Ability to interface effectively with executive management, obtain their commitment and buy-in

  • Strong capability to lead change in a fast-moving environment

  • Strong analytical skills, problem solving ability and coordination of complex projects

  • Strong relationship and networking skills; able to develop and be trusted advisor with a site head, business unit VP, and/or executive

  • Ability to partner with and manage service providers. A change agent that can build cross-functional support across a large network

  • Proven business acumen, financial planning/budgeting, and demonstrated understanding of client's business
