Director, Software Development

Direct product development by providing leadership and guidance to 4 Scrum teams of Developers, QA, BAs, Scrum Masters, Product Owners both consultants/contractors on and offshore (Mexico, Ukraine). Manage the on-going development, replatforming and enhancement for 2 of our premier financial (B2B) products.

We are in the process of becoming a Cloud Based SaaS company. One of our current main initiatives is to move 2 of our products to the cloud using Azure. We need someone who has the "lessons learned" experience and the scars to prove it! This needs to be a seamless transition to our customers!

Here's some of what you will be doing:

  • Accountable for the definition, development, delivery and integration of business solutions within the business unit. Requires the ability to understand business need and develop solutions to provide our business a competitive edge

  • Partner with product management and senior leadership teams to understand our customer's business challenges and then define, develop and implement solutions that meet their needs

  • Ensure a common development methodology and techniques within business unit

  • Staff management duties include: technical input & direction; development & review; technology recommendations and selection; assignment of technology staff to initiatives; staff mentoring and development and conformance to specifications and technical requirements. You will not be doing daily code reviews however, we need someone who has the ability to do so and prides themselves on staying current with technology

  • Accelerate and optimize developer velocity by helping to implement standard methodologies and owning results

  • Administrative duties include staff recruitment, performance management & review, and budget development & management.

  • Work with multiple teams of technology professionals who have a role in the creation, acquisition and rollout of software product solutions (internally and contractor developed)

  • Drive the platform architecture, ensuring it is adaptive to business and technology changes

  • Evolve the technical and business models that support our enterprise; ensure that vendors and partners are in compliance with model standards and practices; set and maintain expectations for technical deliverables

  • Produce, collect, evangelize and enforce architecture and technical guidelines as we transition to the cloud (Azure)

  • Work with leadership and product teams to determine the priorities among product requirements (functional, availability, scalability, and performance) and ensure that designs and implemented systems meet these prioritized requirements

Management of the infrastructure planning for SaaS (Software as a Service) Loud and non-cloud based solutions


Minimum Qualifications:


Minimum of a BA/BS in Computer Science, Math, Engineering or related discipline OR equivalent work related experience, Master's Degree preferred


  • Minimum of 10+ years' experience in software product development with progressive increases in leadership roles/responsibilities. Subscribe to Agile methodology. Prior experience transition to a SaaS (Azure strongly preferred)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of demonstrated successful project implementation experience.

  • Previous experience with overall technical responsibility for large scale projects involving $1-2 million in budget expenditures, 10-15 project team members, including internal and external.

  • Ability to be a strong leader and provide strong leadership to others--spends his/her time and the time of others on what's important; establish clear directions, objectives and measurements; set stretching objectives; lay out work in a well-planned and organized manner; communicate clearly / provide timely information people need to know to do their jobs and feel good about being a member of a team; effectively/efficiently utilize resources, blend people into teams, create strong morale, and foster open dialogue.

  • Familiar with Java/J2EE/SQL tech stack as well as Microsoft opens source technologies, SOAP & RESTful APIs. Cloud experience, preferably Azure, is a MUST

  • Familiarity with application architectures in a distributed computing environment

Strong Planning Skills

  • Ability to accurately scope out length and difficulty of tasks/projects, set clear objectives and goals, break work down into process steps, develop schedules and task/people assignments, anticipate and adjust for problems and roadblocks, measure performance against goals, and evaluate results

  • Ability to lead, mentor, motivate, encourage teams promoting collaboration and comradery

  • Ability to effectively cope with change and shift gears comfortably even when the pressure is on

Strong Business Acumen

  • Prior experience working in a product driven company (B2B). Preference is prior financial or banking software experience but, open to other industries

  • Knowledgeable in current and possible future practices, trends, and developments affecting the business and organization

  • The ability to lead/build technical teams, work cross-functionally (internally) with service providers and business partners

  • The ability to negotiate acceptable tradeoffs and decisions that balance the needs of the product vision against the needs of the technical constituencies

  • Proven experience driving effective stakeholder status, decisions and communications

  • Demonstrated track record of successful product delivery within budget, schedule, scope and quality

  • Maintain functional and technical knowledge and skills to perform the job at a high level of accomplishment

  • Requires outstanding communication (verbal and written), customer relationship management skills, team leadership skills, strong analytical skills, and team-based problem solving skills.

  • Requires client-centric mind set--dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external clients, act with client in mind, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients

  • Ability to negotiate resolution of issues and conflicts for win/win outcomes

  • Strong conflict management skills--can find common ground and get cooperation with minimum noise.
