At Axcella Health, we are a biotechnology company pioneering the research and development of novel multifactorial interventions to support health and address dysregulated metabolism across a broad spectrum of consumers and patients who have limited options. Our AXA Candidates are generated from our proprietary, humanfocused AXA Development Platform and harness the power of endogenous metabolic modulators (EMMs), a broad family of molecules that fundamentally impact and regulate human metabolism.

Using our AXA Development Platform, we have rapidly generated a pipeline of AXA Candidates that are novel compositions of EMMs engineered in distinct ratios and designed to target and maximize the fundamental role that EMMs play in regulating multiple metabolic functions. Our platform has produced a rich pipeline of AXA candidates with programs focused on the metabolic functions of the liver, muscle, and blood.

  • We are developing our lead AXA Candidate, AXA1665, as an investigational drug product for hepatic encephalopathy (HE). We have not made a development path decision for our other AXA Candidates.

We are seeking a talented, highly motivated, and experienced Director Scientific Communications interested in joining a fast-paced Cambridge, MA based biotechnology company. This role will be instrumental in leading the strategy for scientific communications for the organization.


  • Support the scientific communications efforts for Axcella's portfolio, involving cross-functional, multinational internal experts and outside partners, and ensuring integration and alignment of publication, congress, and KOL plans;

  • Lead the development and implementation of communication strategies and plans in consultation with marketing, medical, clinical development, clinical investigators, opinion leaders and external partners;

  • Translate scientific data into relevant product communication topics, as well as coordinating and maintaining relevant planning documents (Scientific Communications Plan, Thought Leader Plan, Clinical Publication Plan);

  • Work with internal colleagues to establish professional relationships with clinical investigators, opinion leaders, and consultants in the relative disease areas of interest

  • Drive cross functional, strategic publication efforts in alignment with product development teams to ensure prioritized submission and publication of data to address unmet educational needs

  • Lead publication planning team(s)

  • Create, manage, and track strategic scientific communications plans in a cross-functional manner

  • Develop and review publications for medical and scientific content accuracy including abstracts, posters/presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, etc.

  • Work with internal and external authors in actively facilitating the development of abstracts, posters, presentations, original manuscripts, and review papers

  • Coordinate medical writing and external vendor activity to ensure timely delivery and submission of publications

  • Ensure consistent adherence to established publication process in accordance with good publication practices

  • Manage assigned publications spend to ensure accurate accounting and reconciliation to budget

  • Collaborate with functions inside and outside of Medical Affairs, including the Product Development Team, to translate available data, summaries, and reports into medical communications and educational resources


  • Advanced degree (M.D., Ph.D, Pharm.D, M.Sc or equivalent) in a scientific discipline;

  • Minimum of four years' experience in a related scientific/medical/pharmaceutical area, one year of which must include scientific communications, medical writing and publications planning and execution;

  • Proven ability to interpret scientific and clinical trial data and present that information in different formats for appropriate audiences;

  • Understanding of the drug development process over different stages;

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; Experience of developing and delivering presentations and publications in English;

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams,

  • Experience working across boundaries and building effective working relationships between functions;

  • Proven record of relationship building, both internally and externally to the organization.

VIEW JOBS 12/5/2019 12:00:00 AM 2020-03-04T00:00 Job Summary The Global Scientific Communications (GSC) lead will drive the development of medical, clinical, and scientific data dissemination strategy for acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) disease resulting in implementation of publication and medical communication plans. The global publication strategy includes tactics for external data communications such as submission of abstracts to medical and scientific congresses, as well as preparation of resulting posters and oral presentations, and manuscripts to medical journals. The GSC lead is also accountable for development of the global medical communications strategy, establishment of scientific platforms, and implementation of the medical education and communications plans for aTTP disease. Assignments will pertain to current or future therapies within the Rare Blood Disorders (RBD), Complement franchise or to disease state materials. Tactical implementation will involve collaboration with external authors and academic experts in the field of aTTP and RBD diseases. In addition to external authors, this position will require working closely with cross-functional teams and internal stakeholders from multiple regions and countries. A key element of this role will be to motivate, drive, and encourage collaborating coauthors and internal resources towards successful publications and implementation of medical communication and education strategies. This role will report to the Global Scientific Communications Franchise Lead, RBD-Complement. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a passionate, high profile, high-impact Scientific Engagement and Communications team and work in a highly dynamic and collaborative setting. Domestic and international travel will be required; approximately 20-25%. Major Responsibilities: * Develop and maintain reasonable expertise in a given therapeutic area(s) disease state within RBD, as well as literature related to overall treatment options and Sanofi Genzyme product data * Drive the development of (and updates to) the yearly global publication and medical communication plans for assigned product(s) * Ensure appropriate tracking and execution of the publications tactical plan for assigned product(s). Oversee (and when needed contribute to) the preparation of high quality abstracts, posters, slide decks, and manuscripts according to established timelines and procedures, and within assigned budget * Engage external investigators and RBD experts when appropriate as authors for publication development * Work with external vendors/service providers, including publication agencies of record and independent medical writers, on publications planning/execution and the creation of annual and long-range global medical communications plans * Contribute to the development of medical/scientific content for scientific exchange, advisory boards, educational symposia/programs, training initiatives, engagement of key opinion leaders and congress plans * Ensure that key data and strategically aligned scientific communication points are included appropriately in publications and internal/external global and regional communications resources, and that statements and conclusions are accurate, balanced, and supported by appropriate data * Participate in relevant cross-functional teams and task forces to represent the Global Scientific Communications and Content Development teams as needed. * Participate in budget forecasting for publications development and data dissemination from company-sponsored studies and post-hoc analyses * Contribute as requested to the development/editing of other important scientific/medical materials to support the medical communications program, which might include briefing documents, written communications, Frequently Asked Question documents, etc. Basic Qualifications * Professional degree in life or Pharmaceutical sciences (Masters, Pharm.D) with 4 or more years of work experience in scientific communications/medical affairs within pharma/biotech industry. * Ability to think strategically and interpret and critique scientific and medical literature with respect to scientific and business implications is essential. * Experience and demonstrated skill in the analysis, communication, and presentation of complex scientific and medical data. * Exemplary customer facing skills, and the capability to collaborate with external Key Opinion Leaders on publication's development and presentations, in a credible, responsive and customer focused manner is a necessity. * Ability to collaborate and build solid working relationships cross-functionally. Excellent interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
