Position Summary

The Director, Engineering will lead an R&D / Engineering Department supporting the VHP business. Responsible for the design, development and overall realization of the product portfolio and sustaining engineering of released products. Manages talent, functional competency development, and overall execution control of all product development activities according to product roadmaps to ensure business success. Adheres to systems and controls to ensure compliance with quality standards, manages the product design end-to-end.

Oversees Managers who lead and/or support cross functional core teams for all phases of new product development and sustaining engineering. The programs represent critical strategic imperatives and are global in both scale and scope, while having direct visibility to senior management. The responsibilities for this position include directing and managing program teams, in partnership with cross-functional management teams for all programs. The role is closely linked to the Marketing counterpart for the business segment.

Requires working within a cross functional team supporting the business strategy and development plans for a product pipeline. Must be familiar with a variety of the design concepts, practices, and procedures and relies on experience and good judgement to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Own the success of product and/or development projects utilizing strong organizational and project tracking skills. Develop and execute departmental goals and objectives and establish operating mechanisms to drive collaboration and decision-making agility.


  • Acts as the primary leader for the product development for VHP, leading program reviews. Ensures the New Product Development (NPD) / Design Controls / Lifecycle management (LCM) processes are followed to assure all planned business/Customer requirements are satisfied. Owns the overall program management of the business segment to ensure targets are met (quality, costs, schedule, scope, etc.). Establishes milestones and monitors adherence to master plans and schedules identifies program problems and manages change to scope/schedule/cost/resources.

  • Directs the work of the team in their function. Identifies and implements continuous improvements across multiple axes (Products, Technologies, Processes, Tools, Methods, and Functional Competencies). Provide team training and development plans.

  • Facilitates communication and interaction among functional business heads to ensure transparency of critical deliverables and milestones in the NPD / LCM processes. Supports team in the development of the cross-functional plan/strategy and guides them in the execution of multi-generational roadmap for a product line or platform.

  • Enables smooth transition across the organization for initial concept through product development, manufacturing and product launch through the leadership and coaching of the team.

  • Demonstrate commitment to product quality by maintaining compliance to all Quality Systems requirements. Fully adhere to all applicable regulations, international guidelines and company policies. Establish and promote a work environment amongst co-workers and direct reports that supports compliance with the Quality System/company policy.

  • Delivers critical, timely communications to the leadership (Business, R & D) on product developments and delivery. Identifies critical dependences, risks and contingency plans. Proactively monitors progress, anticipating the effect of dependencies on schedule, cost, etc.

  • Drives culture of High Performance teams in the department through strategic initiatives (functional competencies, performance management, talent management, process improvements). Manages the department budget, and operating plans.

  • Complete diligence on potential product transfers or development requirements for products or concepts transferred from other potential sources.

Education Degree

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Management or Science

Required Experience

Education & Work Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Biomedical Engineering required.Master's degree in Engineering, Science or Management preferred.

  • 15+ years' experience in R & D environment

  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing / directing an R & D department

  • Minimum 10 years of experience managing / directing NPD / LCM programs

  • Minimum 10 years Capital Equipment experience (Medical Devices, Appliances, Defense, Aerospace)

  • Strong project management skills required

  • Integral role in Multi-Disciplinary Programs (Electrical, Mechanical, Software)


  • Six Sigma Experience

  • Expertise in LEAN Methodologies

  • Master's in Engineering Discipline, MBA

  • Expertise in more than one of the following functional areas: Operations, Supply Chain, Quality

  • PMP Certification

Specific Skills and/or Business Competencies

  • Must have excellent leadership, interpersonal and influencing skills and have a demonstrated ability to lead global, cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated leadership skills including conflict resolution, assertiveness and negotiation skills required.

  • Experience leading teams in projects from initial concept, through development and verification/ validation testing, and into manufacturing. Ability to balance customer, manufacturing, and business requirements to expedite launch of the right product to market.

  • Management of programs successfully through stage gate methodologies. Track record of managing programs to schedule and budget. Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in driving continuous improvement for performance, quality, time and cost; strong planning and organizational skills required. Sets the standard for timeliness, work ethic, and personal integrity.

  • Ability to lead and collaborate within a team-based matrix organization at the executive level in all business functions, levels and cultures. Experience in successfully coordinating with cross-functional departments, (e.g. Legal, Regulatory, Operations, Supply Chain, Scientific Affairs, Marketing, Quality, Service, Etc.)

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound data driven business decisions; understand, track, drill down and question activities and issues in all functional areas. Strong attention to detail, follow-through skills.

  • Must have excellent project management skills and have the ability to manage multiple, high priority situations at once.

  • Excellent oral & written communication skills to interact with Sales, Service and Customers and produce high quality reports and presentations.

Responsibilities The Executive Director is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the community, including full P&L responsibility and serving as the community sales leader. The Executive Director plans, implements, and evaluates all aspects of operations. Regularly communicate performance with the Regional Vice President. * Actively partner with Community Sales Director to assess competitive threats, sales plan, and engage in business to business sales calls. * Understand the community's care regulations and support the resident care program by regularly meeting with the Resident Services Director to discuss and address concerns of the department. * Develop and implement successful strategies regarding labor, occupancy growth, revenue growth, expense control, and quality of services, and review and redirect activity, if necessary. * Ensure adherence to the Resident's Bill of Rights. * Interview, hire, orient, train, supervise and evaluate staff. * Constantly assess resident needs in staffing levels. * Operate the community in accordance with Atria policies and federal, state and local regulations. * Assist in the development of operational budgets and capital requirements, including forecasting and approving all expenses. * Act as a liaison between field operations and the Support Center.
