Astellas is announcing a Director -- R&D Financial Systems and Data Analytics opportunity in Northbrook, IL.

Position & Scope:

This Director R&D Financial Systems and Data Analytics position will be responsible for collaborating with R&D Finance colleagues along with other stakeholders within and outside of Research & Development to identify, develop and implement financial systems to support investment decision making activities across R&D organizations DDR, Pharmaceutical Technology Development (P-Tech D) and Medical and Development (M&D). This role is responsible for the architectural design of the R&D Financial Systems and processes.

In addition this position develops information management standards and monitors data quality of the R&D Finance teams reporting and analytics.

In addition this individual will oversee the analytics team and advices global leaders and team members on developing insightful analytics to answer key business questions.

This position plays a central role in developing and delivering information used by R&D Leadership and R&D Finance. It is expected to provide information that better informs decisions about R&D resources. The metrics and reporting information prepared by this role will be key enablers for improving the culture of financial stewardship within the R&D organizations. This position champions improving and standardizing financial management practices and tools across R&D and Astellas.

This role has important partnerships with the R&D Finance team and the other Finance towers. It interacts regularly with senior leaders in the R&D organizations.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the strategies and objectives of the Head of R&D Financial Projects & Services

  • Improve financial modeling capabilities focusing on productivity analysis (work completed for resources consumed) across Research & Development

  • Supports and executes development of innovation plan

  • Identify and prioritize innovation opportunities (e.g., big data analytics, data visualization, data discovery) to guide resource allocation decisions.

  • Work closely with operational organizations to manage execution of pilot innovation analytic projects

  • Enables capability improvements across R&D.

  • Serve as connector and bridge across Research & Development and Astellas by sharing of best practices and increasing consistency of approaches.

  • Develops ad hoc reports and financial models as required by stakeholders

  • Expertise in effectively utilizing external research information and analytic techniques to provide thorough analyses of opportunities/issues.

  • Supports staff development and other activities that attract and retain top talent for the company.

  • Accountable for data integrity of R&D Managerial Financials. Responsible for data transfers from Astellas multiple financial systems that R&D interacts with.

  • Manage 2 direct reports overseeing Financial Systems, Data Transfers and Data Analytics

  • Oversee outsourced vendor maintaining financial systems (7+ external consultants)

  • Support major organizational projects like onboarding of DDR and P-Tech D, Apple SAP program and the corresponding financial data underlying these projects.

Quantitative Dimensions:

  • This role is supporting businesses with these levels of resources and interfaces:

  • Global Budget: 2373 oku yen / $2.3 billion

  • Global Workforce: ~4,700

  • Number of Global, Regional and Sub-Regional executive partners: ~35

  • This role oversees, coordinates, and integrates information from these sources:

  • Number of affiliates to coordinate: 50+

  • Number of cost centers: ~500

  • Number of WBS: ~175

  • Regional and local accounting information systems:12+affiliates

Organizational Context:

  • The primary partners of this role are the leaders of the R&D Finance teams. This role will also have contact with the R&D leadership team for projects affecting the R&D organization.

  • This position is part of the R&D team that provides services to all the business units in R&D.

  • This position reports to the Head of R&D Financial Projects & Services, based in Northbrook, USA.

  • This position has two internal direct reports and accountable for the overall relationship and management of 2+ outside vendor support teams.

  • There are complexities associated with this role:

  • This role will operate in a global matrix organization.

  • The processes are currently a mixture of affiliate countries, regional and global requiring change management and negotiation to deliver a single globalized process.

Qualification

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate degree(or international equivalent) with emphasis in Finance or Accounting or Computer Science(or related data analysis degree)

  • 12+ years of financial analysis and / or accounting experience, preferably in a multi-national, multi-currency environment

  • Minimum of 7+ years analysis and systems experience, preferably in the

  • pharmaceutical industry and 3 years modeling experience

  • 6+ years experience managing and coaching staff

  • Clinical Operational Finance experience a plus

  • Poise, confidence, adaptability and effective influencing skills needed for interacting with Astellas leaders in challenging situations.

  • Demonstrated strong financial analysis skills coupled with ability to communicate meaning from the data

  • Demonstrated accomplishments improving the effectiveness of financial management reporting

  • Recent experience and demonstrated aptitude leveraging enterprise-grade finance data / reporting systems

  • Demonstrated understanding of how information flows between enterprise-grade systems

  • Demonstrated initiative and creativity in pioneering new approaches and ways of working

  • Effective interpersonal skills and with ability to operate among diverse cultures

  • Strong teamwork and partner behaviors

  • Well developed written and oral communication skills in English

  • History of developing high achieving staff

  • Adept with MS Office applications and familiarity with a statistical package

  • Experience with ERP systems, Anaplan, Tableau

  • Experience with artificial intelligence and robotic process automation tools a plus

  • Working knowledge of various statistical modeling techniques and their application within

  • complex analytical projects, e.g., regression modeling, ROI, portfolio attrition.

Preferred

  • CPA, CA, CMA, CIMA, CGMA, ACMA or international equivalent

  • MBA

  • Experience successfully working in a geographically distributed team

  • Experience supporting biopharma R&D in a finance or planning role strongly preferred

  • Experience with SAP and BPC a plus

  • Experience improving financial planning and reporting activities
