Position Summary

Alexion is seeking a highly qualified attorney to address a broad array of legal matters facing Alexion's research and development and medical affairs clients. The attorney in this position will be responsible for advising clients on issues relating to global clinical trials, FDA and pharmaceutical regulations concerning research and development, product development, and pharmaceutical research. The attorney will work closely with other members of the Legal Department and R&D clients to address global issues across disciplines. The successful candidate will have a broad-based knowledge of laws and regulations governing global pharmaceutical company activities and compliance, an ability to identify legal issues outside their direct area of responsibility and an understanding or interest in Medical Affairs and R&D matters. The work will include client counseling; drafting and negotiating complex life sciences arrangements; reviewing medical material for reactive and proactive use, advising and training business clients on contractual requirements; and general corporate work. The position offers an exciting opportunity to join an evolving Legal Department supporting a growing global business and actively contribute to the discovery, development and delivery of Alexion products to our patients and customers.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, actionable and business-savvy legal advice to clients within Alexion's Research and Development group, Medical Affairs, and other functional areas through all phases of drug research, development, preparation of health economics and clinical trial data for healthcare professionals as well as commercialization

  • Counsel clients on the legal implications of research and development initiatives, particularly external research collaborations and clinical trials

  • Draft, negotiate and advise clients on complex life sciences agreements

  • Support cross functional medical affairs teams to establish therapeutic strategy, structure, use requirements and approve medical documents within the organization for communications for Alexion's pharmaceutical products.

  • Conduct legal and corporate due diligence on strategic transactions

  • Draft, negotiate, and advise clients on a broad range of legal and contractual matters to support Alexion's global business, including clinical trial agreements, informed consent documents, correspondence with institutional review boards/ethics committees, academic and commercial research agreements, clinical supply agreements, consulting agreements, advisory board and HCP engagements, confidentiality and nondisclosure agreements, technology transfer agreements, etc.

  • Interact closely with clients and vendors to understand business requirements and ensure that contractual terms are consistent with management priorities and Alexion's legal and business policies and procedures

  • Draft and manage template legal documents

  • Educate clients regarding relevant legal updates, best practices, and risk mitigation

  • Work extensively and collaboratively with Alexion international colleagues including those in Japan, Australia, Zurich, Ireland and France with respect to contract alignment, local compliance and disclosure requirements, as well as clients at all levels, across multiple functions and geographies, and at a high level of responsiveness and customer service

Essential Qualifications

  • 5-8 years of experience with a life sciences company, preferably a multinational company, and/or a reputable, highly rated law firm, or a combination of both

  • Substantial portion of experience dedicated to advising on life sciences matters, including transactions, material review or regulatory counsel applicable to health care and/or pharmaceutical enterprises.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple commitments and supervise complex projects involving cross-functional participants

  • Demonstrated ability to draft and negotiate complex transaction agreements

  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify, analyze and render legal advice on complex business issues and general corporate matters

  • A global business enterprise view, with recognition of the potential operational implications of corporate legal issues within a region or country

  • Clear potential to establish professional credibility with executive level clients by delivering clear, concise and accurate advice, including the appropriate level of detail and anticipation of follow-up questions

  • Admitted to the Massachusetts bar or be eligible to apply for in-house or reciprocal bar membership in Massachusetts

  • Willingness to travel approximately 10 to 15% of working time for business purposes

  • Passion and commitment to the practice of law
